Cordia E. Abernathy

Cordia E. Abernathy, the daughter of the late Charlie and Ardie Kirby Leffew, was born in Morehouse on Sept. 8, 1918, and died on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at the age of 85.

Mrs. Abernathy was a resident of the Clearview Nursing Center and had lived most of her life in Morehouse. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Pentecostal Church in Morehouse. She also worked with the Foster Grandparents Program.

On Nov. 3, 1934, she was married to James Herbert Abernathy in Morehouse, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 1, 1965.

Mrs. Abernathy is survived by four daughters: Bonnie McCool of St. Charles, Carolyn Lane of Paragould, Ark., Barbara Dodge of Copperas Cove, Texas, and Brenda Moore of Sikeston; four sons, Delbert Abernathy of Cape Girardeau, Herbert Abernathy of Nesbit, Miss., Roger Abernathy of Olive Branch, Miss., and Randy Abernathy of Oran; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Opal Smith and Lillian Neal.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. today, Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Morehouse.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in the First United Pentecostal Church in Morehouse with the Rev. Jimmy Vent of Morehouse officiating.

Interment will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sikeston. Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Morehouse is in charge of all arrangements.
