Vendol Abernathy

Vendol Abernathy, the son of the late Joseph Samual and Sarah Elizabeth Abernathy, was born in Poplar Bluff on Oct. 3, 1929, and died at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau on Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, at the age of 74.

Mr. Abernathy had lived in Morehouse for most of his life. He was a retired truck driver. He served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War and was a member of the Oneness Pentecost Church in Morehouse.

On March 11, 1956, he was married to Mary Davis at Fisk. She preceded him in death on Aug. 11, 1997.

Surviving are four sons, Trenton James Abernathy of Morehouse, Ernie Dale Abernathy of Morley, Kevin Nathaniel Abernathy of Sikeston and Trennis Lee Abernathy of California; one sister, Delpha "Dale" Dement of Georgia; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Cecil, Herbert, Grover and Johnny Abernathy; and three sisters, Rose Bennett, Thelma "Tince" Newman, and Alma Smith.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Morehouse.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, March 1, 2004, at the Oneness Pentecost Church in Morehouse with Rev. Jimmy Vent of Morehouse officiating.

Interment will follow in the McGee Chapel Cemetery near Glen Allen.

Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Morehouse is in charge of arrangements.
