Augusta Johnson Shackleford, the daughter of the late Jesse W. and Clara Freeman Bowers, was born in Stone Hill on March 12, 1914, and died at the St. Peter's Manor in St. Peters on Saturday, March 6, 2004, at the age of 89.
Mrs. Shackleford had lived in St. Louis, Mill Spring and Salem and moved to Bloomfield in 1983. She had been a machine operator and job inspector for Lincoln Engineering Co. in St. Louis until she retired. She was a member of the Mt. Pisgah General Baptist church in Aquilla since 1978. She was a member of the Machinist Lodge #1345 I.A.M. for 29 years, and a was a lifetime Gold Card Member.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond Ellerbrook many years ago. On May 24, 1961, she was married to Rev. Arthur L. Johnson in Mill Spring, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 12, 1978. On Sept. 6, 1986, she married Walter Shackleford, and he preceded her in death on May 28, 1993.
Surviving are two sons, Wade Ellerbrook and Henry Ellerbrook, both of O'Fallon; one daughter, Grace Melano of Lancaster, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one brother, Walter Lee Bowers of Duncan, Okla.; and one sister, Pearl Noble of Fenton.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Fred Bowers; two sisters, Rosalee Dies and Esther Fath; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 11, 2004, in the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter with the Rev. Norman Elledge of Advance officiating.
Interment will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Advance with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
