Jake Leon Pounds, son of the late Jacob Levi and Gertrude Anderson Pounds, was born at Ward, Ark., on June 21, 1920, and died at his home in Bloomfield on Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at the age of 83.
Mr. Pounds was a member of Philadelphia Missionary Baptist Church near Bloomfield. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer in 1967, later worked for the W.E. Sears Youth Center and retired in 1985. He was first married to Rita Skelton, and she preceded him in death on June 12, 1997. He later married Audrey DeBerry.
Survivors include his wife, Audrey Pounds of the home in Bloomfield; three sons, David Pounds of New Madrid, Phillip Pounds of Dexter, and Van Pounds of Jefferson City; one daughter, Marilyn Hester of Bloomfield; and four step-daughters, Teresa Gulley of Bloomfield, Ruby Cox and Cathy Duke, both of Brighton, Tenn., and Debbi Benson of Union City, Tenn.; one brother, Thomas Pounds of Dearborn, Mich.; and one sister, Rita DeMay of Dearborn, Mich.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents and wife Rita, he was also preceded in death by one son, Timothy Pounds.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. today, Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, April 9, 2004, at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Robert Gardner officiating.
Interment will follow in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield with full military honors at the cemetery.
