Lenora Smith, the daughter of the late Luther and Bessie Eaker Gooch, was born in Hornersville on July 18, 1918, and died at the Missouri Southern Healthcare facility in Dexter on June 19, 2004, at the age of 85.

Mrs. Smith had lived in the Essex area most of her life until moving to Dexter 17 years ago. She was active with the Dexter Nutrition Center, the Friendly Peoples Club and was a member of The Gospel Five for over ten years. She had worked at the Christian Bookstore and at McDonald's Dress Shop before retiring. She was a member of the First General Baptist Church in Dexter.

On June 12, 1937, she was married to Carl William Smith. He preceded her in death on April 9, 1982.

Surviving are one son, Don Smith of East Prairie; one daughter, Norma Beatty of Sullivan; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Lyndahl Gooch of Flint, Mich.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carlene Noyes.

Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. Monday, June 21, 2004, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter with Rev. Kenneth Biggs of Dexter officiating.

Interment followed in the Taylor Cemetery near Essex with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
