Richard Darcy, 92, died Wednesday, June 23, 2004, after an extended illness. He was born Aug. 17, 1911, in a borough of Manhattan, New York City, N.Y. He attended the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
He moved to Alabama in January 1939 to work with TVA. He worked at various locations throughout the Valley and retired from TVA in 1976 as Power Plant Superintendent at Wilson Dam. He loved boating, sailing and power.
He served as past commodore at Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club, was a member and past Flotilla Commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, a member of the Tennessee Valley Art Association, Friends of the Sheffield Public Library, Knights of Columbus Council 6661, and Fourth Degree Father Sylvester Fangman Assembly 1681.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Joiner Machtolff-Darcy; one son, Terry Darcy and wife Nancy of Guntersville, Ala.; daughter Carole Darcy of Cordova, Tenn.; brother Louis Darcy of Tonawanda, N.Y.; six step-children, Mike, Alan, Paul Machtolff, Beth Wise, Ann Rivard, and Pam Shaver; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Saturday, June 26, 2004, at Our Lady Of The Shoals Catholic Church in Tuscumbia, Ala., from 10-11:30 a.m. Father Patrick Tierney will officiate at the funeral mass at 11:30 a.m.
Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Kevin Muller and Richard Darcy, Mike and Paul Machtolff, Bruce Wiley and Aron Rockey. Honorary bearers will be Doctors Frank Gillis and W.H. Heaton, Knights of Columbus and Turtle Point Yacht Club members.
