Darnell Nelson, the son of the late William and Alice May McFadden, was born in Ozan, Ark., on Feb. 23, 1907, and died at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston on July 5, 2004, at the age of 97.
Mr. Nelson had lived near Essex and Dexter most of his life and had lived in New Madrid the past two years. He was a retired farmer where he worked on the Fisher Plantation.
He was affiliated with the Methodist Church.
On Dec. 23, 1925, he was married to Nollie May Clark. She preceded him in death in 1943.
Surviving are five sons, Darnell William "Jack" Nelson of Sikeston, Lee Nelson, Jr. of Indianapolis, Ind., Johnson Nelson of Peoria, Ill., Dale Nelson of Massachusetts, and Lindell Nelson of St. Louis; two daughters, Willie Lee Smith of Malden and Ophelia Nelson of Dolton, Ill.; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Nelson of Ozan, Ark.; and one sister, Thelma Darnell of Swanton, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by three sons, Henry Nelson, Lee Thomas and Lewis Calvin (L.C.) Nelson; two sisters, Lula Nelson and Ophelia Nelson.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, July 9, 2004, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Saturday, July 10, 2004, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home with Rev. L.J. Nabors of Sikeston officiating.
Interment will follow in the Macedonia Cemetery in Malden with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.
