He was born Nov. 10, 1932, in the Oak Ridge community, son of John A. and Dessie Walker Newell. He and Bertha Jaco were married on Nov. 1, 1952, and she survives.
Survivors include two sons, Eddie and Dale Newell, both of Bloomfield; seven brothers, Rev. Charles, Carl, Leslie and Gene Newell, all of Jackson, Lyman Newell of Webster Grove, Johnny and George Newell of Oak Ridge; five sisters, Alice Kester of Oak Ridge, Pauline Kimball, Patsy Pulliam and Aline Poe, all of Jackson, and Karen Eaker of Cape Girardeau; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter and one brother.
He began cutting timber with his father at the age of nine. He worked for the former Jaco Brothers Timber Buyers before starting his own business., Newell Logging. He retired in 1994, after 30 years. He had served in the National Guard from 1951 to 1952.
He was a member of the Apostolic Assembly of Jesus Christ of Poplar Bluff, a church board member, and a former deacon of churches where his wife had served as pastor.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. today, Friday, July 16, 2004, at the McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson.
Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 17, 2004, at the funeral home with Revs. Eddie Sisco and Robert Poe officiating.
Interment will follow in the Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.
