Melba Thurston, the daughter of the late Richard and Effie Adeline Jerls McCamish, was born in Bernie on Sept. 20, 1918, and died at The Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at the age of 85.
She had lived most of her life in Bernie and moved to Jackson eight years ago. She had attended the Bernie Methodist Church until moving to Jackson. She was a cosmetologist and had owned and operated a beauty shop in Dexter before moving to Bernie. She and her husband also owned and operated the Farmer's Insurance Group office in Bernie for many years.
In 1933 she was married to H.A. Walker, and to this union one child was born. On July 12, 1964, she married C.E. "Red" Thurston in Bernie, and he preceded her in death on March 6, 1981.
Surviving are one daughter, Fleta Sue Edmonds of St. Louis; one step-son, Kenneth Thurston of Bernie; three grandchildren, Eddie C. Edmonds of Houston, Texas, Kelli Lee Stevens of Anniston, Ala., Lucy Thurston of Bernie; five great-grandchildren, Devon and Clayton Stevens, both of Phoenix City, Taylor and Ryan Edmonds, both of Houston, Texas, and Tyler Thurston of West Memphis, Ark.; four sisters, Velva Robisky of Dallas, Texas, Evelyn Robinson of Jackson, Mayola Gibson of Desoto, Texas, and Martha Duffie-Reynolds of Bernie.
She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Deborah Lynn Edmonds and Douglas Thurston.
Visitation will be held after 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, in the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter with Rev. Mack Williams of Jackson officiating.
Interment will follow in the Bernie Cemetery with Martha Duffie-Reynolds, funeral director, and Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
