Augustus "Whitey" Hannel, son of the late John and Opal Jackson Hannel, was born at Louisville, Ky., on Aug. 16, 1932, and died at Poplar Bluff Medical Center on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at the age of 72.

Mr. Hannel was a retired Staff Sergeant with the United States Air Force and had been a resident of Bloomfield since his retirement in 1971. He was a member of the Bloomfield American Legion Post #382.

On April 6, 1958, he was married to Susie Sommers.

Survivors include his wife Susie Hannel of the home in Bloomfield; one son, Augustus Hannel, Jr., of Park Hills; three daughters, Marsha Eaton of Dexter, Karen Hopper of Poplar Bluff, and Joy Hannel of Festus; two sisters, Rose Wells of Thompson, Ga., and Dorothy Jones of Florida; and three granddaughters.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield.

Graveside rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield with Rev. Cotus James officiating.

Full military rites will be given by the Stoddard County Veterans Honor Guard. Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
