Hurshel E. "Gene" Smith, the son of the late William Francis and Minnie Kay Eaves Smith, was born in Pyletown on April 7, 1925, and died at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at the age of 79.

He was a resident of Pyletown until moving to Sturdivant seven years ago. He was a retired truck driver and farmer, a member of the Bridge Church of Christ and also attended the Bethel Church near Advance. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Bernie and a veteran of World War II.

On Nov. 22, 1948, he was married to Wanda Lea Gaines in Piggott, Ark. She preceded him in death on Nov. 13, 1996. On Nov. 27, 1997, he was married to Ruby W. Swift Howard in Sturdivant.

Surviving are his wife, Ruby Smith of Puxico; three sons, Brian Scott Smith, Ronald E. and Leon Smith, all of Dexter; four step-daughters, Phillis Robinett of Advance, Lecie Winberry of St. Louis, Shelia Owens of Jackson, and Regina Householder of Cruger, Miss.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and 17 step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six brothers: Thomas, Irvin, Delbert and Roy Smith, Don Cox and Ted Cox; and one sister, Bertha Grote.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter with Masonic rites at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, in the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter with Bro. Ray Placher of Puxico and Bro. Stan Dauck of Bernie officiating.

Interment will follow in the Armstead-Dowdy Cemetery with full military rites near Dexter.
