Virginia Battles

Virginia Battles, daughter of the late Albert Sidney Johnson, Sr. and Anna Mae Smith Johnson, was born Feb. 21, 1923, at Bernie and died in the Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center at Bloomfield on Monday, May 2, 2005, at the age of 82.

Mrs. Battles was a member of the Bernie Christian Church, a former employee of the Rainey Funeral Home in Bernie, had previously worked at the Brown Shoe Company and Elder Manufacturing Company, and was a resident of Bernie.

She was first united in marriage to James C. Ott. She then married John P. Battles on Jan. 26, 1963, at Caruthersville. Mr. Battles preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 1989.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Nina Ott of Dexter; two grandchildren, Jerry Ott and Kenny and Windy Ott , all of Dexter; two great-grandchildren, Jesse and Kendi Ott, both of Dexter; three nieces, LaDawn and husband Roger Owens of Bernie, Francis and husband Bill Herrin, Mary and husband Loy Cannon, all of California; three nephews, Bob Johnson of Dexter, Bill and wife Sheila Johnson of Bernie, and Chris and wife Gay Tanner of Bernie; three sisters-in-law, Eujanna Johnson, Mary Tanner, and Maxine and husband Jack Adcock, all of Bernie.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Janice Lee Ott; one brother, Albert Sidney Johnson, Jr.; one sister, Ruby Jo Tanner; and two great-grandsons, Jeromy Thomas Ott and Joshua Thomas Ott.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 5, 2005, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel in Bernie with Rev. R.P. Davison officiating.

Interment will follow in the Bernie Cemetery.
