Charles L. McGowen, son of the late Thomas W. McGowen and Bertha Jackson McGowen, was born on July 19, 1923, in Dunklin County and died in his residence near Dexter on Thursday, July 28, 2005, at the age of 82.
Mr. McGowen was a former member of Sugar Tree General Baptist Church in Dexter where he had served as deacon, a former welder at Arvin Automotive in Dexter, a veteran of the United States Army and a resident of Dexter.
He was united in marriage to Myrtle A. Carter on Jan. 26, 1943, at Malden. Mrs. McGowen preceded him in death on Nov. 8, 2001.
Survivors include three sisters, Verlia Lawrence of Iuka, Ill., Thelma Brown and Shirley Carwile, both of Dexter; two brothers, Thomas McGowen of Dexter and Carroll McGowen of Selmer, Tenn.; a special great-niece, Carla Sue Harris of the home in Dexter.
Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Lawrence H. McGowen, Ralph B. McGowen and two in infancy.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 2005, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1, 2005, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dean Williams officiating.
Interment will follow in the Bernie Cemetery.
