James E. Callahan, formerly of Dexter, died Sept. 29, 2005, at home in Steelville after a brief battle with colon cancer. He was 79.
James was born on July 6, 1926, at Cherryville to the union of Fred Callahan and Lola Callahan (nee Worley). On June 12, 1949, James was united in marriage to Phyllis Ann Gravatt at the First Baptist Church in Steelville. This union was blessed with one daughter, Denise Ann Callahan of Ballwin.
After graduating from the University of Missouri in 1949, James taught vocational agriculture at Greenville and Union for 11 years. James then served with the Soil Conservation Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, for 27 years. He was also a professional photographer. He retired and moved to Steelville in September 1987.
James was preceded in death by his twin sisters and his parents. Those who survive to mourn his passing from this life are his wife, Phyllis Ann; daughter, Denise Callahan; and friend of the family, Carol Bock. He leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
Funeral services were provided by the Britton Brothers Funeral Home.
Committal prayers and interment was in the Steelville Cemetery.
