Herschel DeWitt

Herschel E. DeWitt, son of the late Hollis DeWitt and Effie Rattlif DeWitt, was born on April 23, 1935, at Matthews and died in Missouri Southern Healthcare at Dexter on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005, at the age of 70.

Mr. DeWitt was a member of the Essex Church of Christ, a former warehouse worker for Flemining Company in Sikeston, a veteran of the United States Army and a resident of rural Essex.

He was united in marriage to Linda L. Mitchell on May 23, 1958, at Bloomfield. Mrs. DeWitt survives of the home near Essex.

Besides his wife, survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Bradley and Laurie DeWitt of Morehouse; one daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Jimmy Groves of Morehouse; two brothers, Charles DeWitt of Sikeston and Jerry DeWitt of Texas; three sisters, Lois Manes of Essex, JoAnn Matthews of Sikeston and Mickey Rudisill of Morehouse; and three grandchildren, Jeremy Roberts of Cape Girardeau, Erica DeWitt and Taylor DeWitt, both of Morehouse.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Allen "Tinker" DeWitt.

Visitation was held from 10-11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, 2005, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter.

Funeral services were then conducted at 11:30 a.m. in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Herman Morse officiating.

Interment followed in the Dexter Cemetery.
