Essie Jewell Griffin

Essie Jewell Griffin, daughter of the late William Edward and Bertha Wilson Prince, was born in Delaplaine, Ark., on Nov. 12, 1924, and died in Sacramento, Calif., on Friday, Nov. 11, 2005, at the age of 80.

She had lived in California for several years before moving to Essex in 1982. She had moved back to California for the last six months. She was a member of the Olive Branch General Baptist Church where she was Sunday School teacher for 16 years. She also served as a Sunday School teacher for 12 years at the Harmony General Baptist Church in San Rafael, Calif. She was the president of the Missionary Society for 20 years.

In 1941, she was married to Robert D.L. Griffin in Grayridge. He preceded her in death on April 11, 2003.

Surviving are two sons, Jim Griffin of Sacramento, Calif., and Keith Griffin of Missouri; one brother, Link Prince of Michigan; one sister, Gladys Griffin of Arkansas; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Lyndell Wayne Griffin on Feb. 20, 2000.

Visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, at the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter with Rev. Doyle Corlew of Dexter officiating.

Interment will follow in the Essex Cemetery with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
