Lucille Bates, daughter of the late James Kifer and Ora Vineyard Kifer, was born on Sept. 9, 1920, at Bernie and died in Missouri Southern Healthcare at Dexter on Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at the age of 85.

Mrs. Bates was a member of the First General Baptist Church in Dexter, a homemaker and a resident of Dexter.

She was united in marriage to Robert Daniel Bates on Feb. 23, 1937, at Bernie. Mr. Bates preceded her in death on Oct. 27, 1986.

Survivors include two sons, Terry Bates of Bloomfield and Larry Bates of Bernie; three daughters, Gloria Wilson of Essex, Peggy Wiggs of Independence, and Sandra Borders of Dexter; two sisters, Helen Thurston of Kennett and Goldie Hunt of Flint, Mich.; 15 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Danny Bates; three grandchildren; four brothers, Homer Kifer, Dawson Kifer, Freeman Kifer and Earl Kifer; five sisters, Vera Kifer, Mabel Kifer, Pansy Walker, Pearl Ott, and Amy Becking.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, May 4, 2006, at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 5, 2006, at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel in Dexter with Rev. Kenneth Biggs officiating.

Interment will follow in the Bernie Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
