Norman "Nellie" Underwood, son of the late Walter and Ola Humphery Underwood, was born at Puxico on Aug. 15, 1922, and died at Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter on Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at the age of 83.

Mr. Underwood had spent most of his life in the Bloomfield community. He owned and operated Underwood Shell Station in Bloomfield for many years, had worked at Christian's Store in Bloomfield the past 25 years, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. Norman was a member of Bloomfield Masonic Lodge #153 A.F. & A.M., and a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of St. Louis. On July 2, 1946, he was married to Maxine Christian, and she preceded him in death on June 10, 1994. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl, Junior and Joe Underwood.

Survivors include one son, Gary Underwood of Saluda, N.C.; one brother, Gene Underwood of Bloomfield; two sisters, Pansy Dennis and Jessie Robey, both of Bloomfield; two grandsons, Ty Norman and Cade Warner Underwood, both of Saluda, N.C.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006, at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield. Masonic rites will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 21, 2006, at Chiles-Cooper Funeral Chapel in Bloomfield with Rev. Kevin Eskew officiating.

Interment will follow in the Bloomfield Cemetery.
