Helen Cates, the daughter of the late Joseph and Bessie Fort Benes, was born in Houston, Texas, on Dec. 12, 1925, and died at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006, at the age of 80.

Mrs. Cates had lived in the Dudley area since 1951. She was a charter member of the Dudley Baptist Church, a leader with the Wilkerson 4-H Club, and was a member of the National Audubon Society. She and her husband started the Cates Orchard near Dudley in 1953. She loved flowers and growing things and dearly loved her grandchildren.

On Nov. 5, 1943, she was married to George Cates in Pearland, Texas.

Surviving are her husband, George Cates of Dudley; one son, Ronnie Cates of Dudley; three daughters, Patti Kinnaman of Bloomfield, Bessie McRoy and Janet Johns, both of Dudley; five grandchildren; one brothers, John Benes of Baytown, Texas.

She was preceded in death by one son, Timothy Cates; four sisters; and one brother.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21, 2006, at the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter with the Rev. Bill Webster of Poplar Bluff and Rev. John McFarlen of Myrtle officiating.

Interment will be in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield with Watkins & Sons Funeral Home of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
