Byron Scism, son of the late Thomas Gilbert and Myrtie C. Tanner Scism, was born at Leora on Sept. 12, 1917, and died at Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006, at the age of 89.
Mr. Scism had spent most of his life in the Bloomfield community but had been a resident of Dexter the past seven years. In 1941 he founded Scism Motor Company in Bloomfield which he continued to operate until his retirement in 1997. He was a member of the Bloomfield Masonic Lodge #153 A.F. & A.M. and the Scottish Rite, Valley of St. Louis, and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. On Jan. 19, 1952, he was married to Betty Keller.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Scism of the home in Dexter; three sons, Tom Scism of Dexter, Bill Schween of Memphis, Tenn., and Eric Schween of New Glarus, Wis.; two brothers, Sam Scism of Park Hills and Thatcher Scism of St. Charles; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be held after 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield.
Graveside rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. at Bloomfield Cemetery with Rev. Charles Hanna of Poplar Bluff officiating.
Interment will follow in the Bloomfield Cemetery.
