Thomas J. McGowen, son of the late Thomas Wiley McGowen and Bertha Jackson McGowen, was born on Jan. 13, 1927, at Detroit, Mich., and died in his residence at Dexter on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at the age of 80.

Mr. McGowen was of the Baptist Faith, a retired sergeant first class in the United States Army, serving in World War II, Korean War, and the Vietnam War, he was an honorary member of the V.F.W. Post 5036 in St. Charles, Ill., and a resident of Dexter.

He was united in marriage to Pansy Nunn on Oct. 6, 1949, at Piggott, Ark. Mrs. McGowen survives of the home in Dexter.

Besides his wife, survivors include one son, Clifford McGowen of Arbor Vita, Wis.; four daughters, Deborah Beaird of Dexter, Rebecca McGowen of Utica, Ill., Susan Williams and Robin Carlson, both of St. Charles, Ill.; one brother, Carroll McGowen of Selmer, Tenn.; three sisters, Verlia Lawrence of Iuka, Ill., Thelma Brown and Shirley Carwile, both of Dexter; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles McGowen, Lawrence McGowen and Ralph McGowen.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Daniel Sinnamon officiating.

Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery.
