Joe M. Hampton, the son of the late David and Mary Hamlett Hampton, was born near Steele on Oct. 4, 1921, and died at the Grandview Healthcare Center in Washington on March 12, 2007, at the age of 85.
He had lived in St. Charles and Robertsville most of his life. He lived in Dudley and New Madrid from 1992 until 2006 when he moved to Beaufort. He was a retired plumbing contractor.
He was first married to Berniece Franks; she preceded him in death in 1954.
On Nov. 16, 1957, he was married to Mae G. Barber in Hernando, Miss. She preceded him in death on May 25, 1990.
He later married Margaret Jimmerson, and she preceded him in death in 2001.
Surviving are one son, Bill Hampton of Yucalpa, Calif.; three daughters, Pat Hoeft of Beaufort, Wanda Leathers of LaBelle, Fla., and Mary Foster of Kennett; one step-daughter, Faye Hopper of Nixa; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, George Hampton of Dexter; four sisters, Helen Naile of Farmington, Betty McCullough of Sikeston, Pauline Lindsey of Harrisburg, Ark., and Mildred Aaron of Anderson, Ind.
He was preceded in death by one son, Terry Hampton; one step-son, George Leon Emory; two step-daughters, Mary Esick and Pansy Barr; three brothers, Charles Hampton, Sr., Bob Hampton, and Nub Hampton.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2007, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 15, 2007, at the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter with Rev. Tim Ingle of Bernie officiating.
Interment will follow in the Dudley Cemetery with Watkins & Sons Funeral Home of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
