Virgil Lee Gilkey

Virgil Lee Gilkey, son of the late Joseph Virgil and Bessie Freeman Gilkey, was born in Danville, Ark. on April 23, 1934, and died at the Cypress Point Nursing Center in Dexter on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2007, at the age of 73.

Mr. Gilkey had lived in Dexter the past 30 years. He was a retired insurance agent and attended the Baptist Church. He enjoyed reading, was an avid Cardinals fan and also loved to fish.

On Sept. 19, 1953, he was married to Ola Faye Gaines in Bernie.

Surviving are his wife, Ola Faye Gilkey of Dexter; two sons, Dennis Gilkey and wife Becky of Festus and Micheal Gilkey of Lawrence, Kan.; three daughters, Linda Bresee, Sandra Griffin and husband Dale, all of Dexter, and Karen Gilkey of Lawrence, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, James Gilkey and wife Cecilia; and one sister, Earlene Toole and husband Randol of Gideon.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Gene, Charles and Roy Gilkey; and two sisters, Sue Allen and Evelyn Gilkey; and one great-granddaughter, Rachel Bresee.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter with the Rev. Mike Watkins of Dexter officiating.

Interment will follow in the Armstead Dowdy Cemetery near Dexter with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
