Irene Smith, daughter of the late William Henry Pope and Mary Azlee Bunch Pope, was born on Dec. 20, 1924, in Wayne County, Tenn., and died at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston on Sept. 27, 2007, at the age of 82.
Mrs. Smith was a retired machine operator with Elder Manufacturing Company in Dexter and a resident of Bloomfield.
On Aug. 19, 1940, she was united in marriage to Eugene "Bud" Smith, Jr. in Shaw, Miss. Mr. Smith preceded her in death on Feb. 14, 2000.
Survivors include one son, Bobby Gene Smith of Pontiac; one daughter, Barbara Jane Speer of Bloomfield; seven half-brothers, Garland Pope of Clarksdale, Miss., Eugene McCoy of Jackson, Miss., Waymond McCoy of Moorhead, Miss., J.W. Pope of Scott, Miss., W.H. Pope of Laurel, Miss., Hubert Pope of Cleveland, Miss., and Roy Pope of Gore Springs, Miss.; one half-sister, Violet "Doll" Corley of Shaw, Miss.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd and Lloyd Pope; two half-brothers, Homer Pope and Arnold Davis; and two sisters, Gracie and Mary Pope.
Visitation will be held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter from 5-8 p.m. Sunday Sept. 30, 2007.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel in Dexter with Rev. Terry Miller officiating.
Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery.
