Bloomfield PD receives new cars, bikes

BLOOMFIELD-The Bloomfield Police Department recently received some much needed updates for the department.

The city's two vehicles, a Ford Explorer and a Ford Crown Victoria, had both reached around 100,000 miles and were beginning to show problems.

"They were just nickel and diming us to death," said Police Chief Jason Curtman. "The people of Bloomfield need to know that their police can reach them if they're needed."

Bloomfield Mayor Raymond McAnally said that both vehicles, especially the car, were being to deteriorate mechanically to the point where the city feared it would impede the department's ability to respond to calls. He said it's important for the people of Bloomfield to know that their police department is able to reach them quickly in their time of need.

The city purchased a 2007 Ford Crown Victoria and a 2004 Ford Explorer to replace the older vehicles.

The old Crown Victoria did not come with the law enforcement package, but the replacement did. The new car came ready for light bars and radios and has the police interceptor engine that is available to law enforcement agencies.

The new design on the side was drafted by Chief Curtman and made by Kinder Signs out of Sikeston.

"I thought we should incorporate the historical significance of Bloomfield into the department," Curtman said. "We're really pleased with how it turned out."

The car is expected to last between four and five years, and extending its life is part of the reason for the Explorer.

The Chief will be driving the Explorer during the day shift in an effort to alleviate some of the work load from the Crown Victoria.

In addition to the new vehicles, the department is also instituting a new bicycle patrol program.

Thanks to a $1,000 donation from Dexter Wal-Mart, the City has been able to purchase two new bicycles to be used in the flatter areas on the north side of town, where coincidentally, there has been a larger problem with crime.

Curtman said that over the summer Assistant Chief Cheryl Malone began doing foot patrol over the area and calls from that part of town have since dropped drastically.

"The main problem is that when doing foot patrol, an officer could be as far s nine-tenths of a mile away from the car," Curtman said. "These bikes would save a lot of time on that aspect."

The bike patrol will give officers the opportunity to be out among the people and cover a larger area while being able to speed response times to other areas of town.

Cheryl is in good shape, but some of you fellows (not naming names)are going to have a tough time keeping up with her!

Maybe she can get a rickshaw and pull you-lol-step it up fellows!

In reference to the comment made by AngelinaJolie, I would like to say that people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Using a screen name in order to conceal your identity and to avoid taking responsibility for a terrible, hurtful comment is nothing short of a cowardly act. Evidentially some people do not realize how much we rely on our law enforcement officials. As you sleep at night safely in your cozy, warm bed our police officers are constantly looking out for your well being regardless of the danger that it might pose for them on their shift. It is possible that the officer watching out for you and your family may have just said goodbye to his/her family for the last time not knowing that he/she would be taking a bullet to save your life or someone you know and care about. Show a little more respect and don't be so quick to judge. God will make his judgment on all of us in due time. What do you think your sentence will be?

Oh yeah, you might want to study the meaning of "karma."

Congrats to the Bloomfield PD for the much needed upgrades and additions.

I am so sorry if I offended the Bloomfield PD with my compliment of Cheryl.I didn't name any other officers, but obviously some felt slighted by my comment.I apologize.

As I see you all every day here in Bloomfield, I don't think I will reveal my "true identity",as it would be awkward, and from the tone of your reply, perhaps threatening to my person and place of business or co-workers.

As I am not or have, nor will I ever be a practicing Buddhist, I can only give you the short definition of "karma"-the law of particular type of actions lead to similar or appropriate results. As you sow,so shall you reap is probably the closest Judeo-Christian analogy,or if you plant cotton seed, you should grow cotton, not apples.

That being said, since you bravely used your own name, and I know my onscreen "persona" are despised by you, I will try to be even nicer to you, then you will be nice to me,although according to Karmic laws-that is an unintentional consequence.

BDSmith, you are not alone in your disgust with AngelinaJolie's rude, and disrespectful comments. Once I learned her true identity, I was not the least bit surprised.

I don't know Angelina Jolie from Adam, but I do know when people are flaming after someone says there sorry,it should drop. That is Christian,to forgive others as we want to be forgiven. All of us,including myself, must forgive in order to be forgiven.

Do I agree with her-nope,but I sure dont agree a lot that is posted, but hey, that's life.

I think that if we make others feel threatened by our comments, then how are we showing any respect that we claim to have for others.

I am glad for Bloomfield to have these new things,it is something to be thankful for.

GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU POSTING,MAY YOU ALL HAVE A BLESSED AND SAFE THANKSGIVING-I MEAN THAT WITH ALL MY HEART.

(I am thankful I live in a country where I can say my piece and not be shot or put in jail,God bless America.)

If the shoe fits -??? "AngelinaJolie" paid a complement to the female police officer. If THAT offended the MALES in this crowd, well DUH!!. I for one believe ALL law enforcement personel MALE AND FEMALE should NOT be out of shape. More bikes, from what I hear Bloomfield MO ain't THAT big.

The Chief will drive the gas guzzling SUV during the day to save miles on the more fuel efficient car? The car may last a little longer, but the extra gas at $3 per gallon will eat up any savings on repairs.

With the Sheriff dept. based in Bloomfield, why do they need 2 cars anyway? Are 2 cops on duty here at the same time, if that is true it would be more of a waste of money than the 2 cars.

A bicycle patrol in Bloomfield……I don't even know where to begin with this one.

I know the Chief has a big city approach toward law enforcement and that is not playing too well already. But I really doubt people will tolerate a big city budget.
