Gerald M. Bess, son of the late Beauford and Lona White Bess, was born at Advance on Oct. 1, 1923, and died at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007, at the age of 84.
Mr. Bess had spent most of his life in the Bloomfield community, and he was a 50-year member and past master of Bloomfield Masonic Lodge #153 A.F. & A.M., a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of St. Louis, Bloomfield Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #385, a member of the Bloomfield American Legion Post #382, a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II, and a former P.O.W., and a member and Sunday School teacher at Trinity United Methodist Church in Bloomfield. Mr. Bess retired as a rural mail carrier from the Bloomfield Post Office in 1984.
On June 16, 1944, he was married to Lenora Powers, and she preceded him in death on April 9, 1964. On Dec. 24, 1968, he was married to Bonnie Lee.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Bess of the home in Bloomfield; one son, Dennis Bess of Bloomfield; three step-sons, Carroll Boswell of Bowling Green, Ky., Eldon Boswell of Scott City, and Tom Boswell of Puxico; one step-daughter, Connie Pixley of Bloomfield; 26 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Mike Bess; one brother, Kenneth Bess; and one sister, Janette Moore.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007, at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield. Masonic rites will be held at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007, at Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Susan Hoyle and Rev. Kevin Eskew officiating.
Interment will follow in the Bloomfield Cemetery with Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield in charge of arrangements.
