Jerome Dean Nichols died at Decatur Memorial Hospital on Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007, after a lengthy illness.

There will be no visitation or services at this time.

He was born in Dexter on Oct. 31, 1938, to Charles Nichols and Jessie Smith. He was named after Jerome Herman aka "Dizzy Dean", the famous 1930's Cardinal's pitcher. In his youth, Jerry lived in Creve Coeur, Ill., and attended East Peoria High School. He served 21 years in the U.S. Navy receiving a Purple Heart while on the destroyer USS Higbee and retired as Senior Chief (E8) Radioman. He later worked in various productions management positions with companies in Missouri and Michigan.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Jean Nichols of Decatur; a brother, Jackie Lee Nichols of Rockledge, Fla.; a sister, Judith V. Bodine of East Peoria, Ill.; a daughter, Gwen Shacklebauer; and a grandson.
