![]() Noreen Hyslop photo Jeff Jarrell has been hired as the city of Dexter's new Humane Officer and Code Enforcement Officer. Jarrell is pictured with a large mixed-breed dog that was found in the area of Business 60 and North Sassafras Streets last week. |
"They're all a little skiddish," Jeff Jarrell says of the animals he's had to rescue, "but I keep treats in the truck and I haven't had any trouble yet."
After just a week on the job, Jarrell says he had 13 dogs and three cats at the city's humane shelter, but during the local Orscheln's Farm and Home annual Adopt-a-Pet event recently a total of ten animals found new families.

| Noreen Hyslop photo Periodically, The Daily Statesman will be spotlighting animals that are housed in the city's humane shelter and are up for adoption or need to be reunited with their rightful owner. "Boomer" is a male cat that has been declawed, neutered and has all of his shots. His owner recently moved into a nursing care facility and was unable to find a permanent home for her feline. Humane Officer Jeff Jarrell says that the cat is very docile and has been well cared for. Anyone interested in adopting Boomer is asked to contact the human officer through the Police Department at 624-5512. |
Since that time, additional animals have been rescued from the city streets and currently there are six dogs and nine cats calling the Dexter Humane Shelter home.
One would expect that the job would only call for only the rescue of dogs and cats, but Jarrell was called recently to remove a squirrel from the home of a Dexter resident. Donning heavy gloves, he cornered and captured the bushy-tailed rodent in the bedroom of a residence on Terrace Drive.
The humane officer's position is a full-time one, five days a week and at times involves a risk when approaching a not-so-friendly canine or feline. When asked how he approaches those subjects, Jarrell was quick to respond, "Very carefully!"
The Daily Statesman will be periodically spotlighting rescued pets to assist the humane officer in finding rightful owners or in adopting unwanted dogs and cats.

I don't agree with you on that MikeM. I have two pit bulls and they both are babies. I took my male to have fixed and the vet and staff couldn't get over how good he was. It is the owner that makes a dog what they are. If you show a dog love than they will be lovable. I think there is a lot of people who agree with that. I have a 2 year old daughter that loves on them and lays on them and they love her right back. But I will say this no one will try to hurt her or break in this house. So I sleep good at night knowing this.
Yes there was a humane officer in the past and let's just say that he is not on the job anymore for reasons alot of officials have lost their jobs for, huh Rinehart? lol As far as pit bulls go, they are useless animals and should have never been introduced to this planet there has never been any good comments about these animals, never!!
If I am ever lucky enough to move back to my hometown....DEXTER....I will volunteer to help Jeff in any way he may need me. Scrubbing the kennel to taking dogs for a walk/jog. There is no job I can think of that can make you feel better than taking care of creatures who count on us for everything....and I'll do it for free.
Now...if he can just EDUCATE the politicians there about how great Pit Bulls can be when raised correctly.....oh well. I can keep hoping.
Hey...Buddy Lawrence!!!...I'm running in a St Patrick's Day 5K here in Pensacola...just so you know. For those of you who don't know it...Buddy used to run about 12 miles a day in high school and was out on the road before most of us were even up in the morning. That was 1968 - 1972.
Take care Bearcats,
Steve Lind
I met Mr. Jerrel at Orshlen's when he was there with the adoption program - he seems like a very nice man, I think it is wonderful what he is doing with these animals. This kind of event needs to be repeated more often - it was a huge success.
Keep up the good work!
GL, Dexter has had a Humane Officer for a few years...our first one worked for a while, then got arrested for burglary...our second one didn't last long for reasons I'm not aware of, and this one is a former truck driver, whom, I'm guessing, wanted a change of scenery. They've all done well from what I have seen...and I wish them well on their dangerous job.
Excellent!! Since this officer is "new," I'm wondering if Dexter has had a Humane officer in the past? I haven't noticed coverage of it, if so.
Good idea, Statesman, to feature these animals. Some of your residents have responded to the abandoned dogs featured in the North Stoddard Countian - and they've traveled all the way to Marble Hill to adopt them.
This coverage is long overdue!
