Benton Garfield Bowman

Benton G. Bowman, son of the late Acy Bowman and Irene Sneed Bowman, was born on April 10, 1921, in Malden and died at the John J. Pershing V.A. Medical Hospital in Poplar Bluff on Friday, March 28, 2008, at the age of 86.

Mr. Bowman was a former resident of Malden and Bernie before moving to Dexter in 1963. He served in the United States Navy in 1942 and was released on a medical discharge. Mr. Bowman was a former fireman on the Malden Fire Department, worked at Federal Mogul in Malden, Delta Asphalt in Cape Girardeau, and worked for Williams Moving Company in Dexter.

He was first united in marriage to Mary McKenzie on Jan. 16, 1943, in Malden. Mrs. Bowman preceded him in death on Jan. 30, 1962. On Oct. 5, 1963, he was united in marriage to June Mallory Qualls in Dudley. Mrs. Bowman survives of the home in Dexter.

Besides his wife, other survivors include one son, Keith Bowman of Garland, Texas; one daughter, Marilyn Bowman DeJournett of Essex; by three step-sons, Dean Qualls of Venice, Fla., Carl Qualls of Dexter, and David Qualls of Advance; two brothers, Calvin Bowman of Malden and Ed Bowman of Campbell; three sisters, Nadine Bowman Trobaugh of Kennett, Betty Jo Bowman Green of Campbell, and Martha Bowman Teaster of Pocahontas, Ark.; also 11 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchidlren.

Besides his first wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one brother Thomas Amos Bowman and by one step-grandson Carl Adam Qualls.

Visitation will be held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter from 5-8 p.m. Sunday March 30, 2008.

Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, March 31, 2008, at 10 a.m. in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel in Dexter with Rev. Ed Stoner officiating.

Interment will follow in the Malden Memorial Park Cemetery in Malden.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Envelopes will be provided by Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home.
