Just one month ago, the average price in the state of Missouri for a gallon of gasoline was $3.04. Today, that average price has risen to $3.40 in the state and $3.50 in the nation. One year ago today, the average for the city of Dexter was $2.66.
Prices in Dexter are quite reflective of both averages.
At most businesses in Dexter, one gallon of regular unleaded was at $3.39 with several stations as much as $3.49.
According to missourigasprices.com, Stoddard County prices are somewhat lower than the surrounding counties with some as much as 10-cents higher.
Among the main reasons for the price spike is the recent increase in the cost of crude oil.
U.S. Crude, currently flirting with the $120 per-barrel mark, has been fueled by both increased world-wide demand and the continued decline of the U.S. Dollar in value.
Adjusted for inflation, oil is now above the $101.70 peak hit in April 1980, according to the International Energy Agency, a year after the Iranian revolution.

shannonhoon, none of the current presidential candidates have a sensible solution despite their campaign rhetoric. These problems we face are not going to go away and none of us can personally bring market prices down. We can, however, try to prepare now for the hard times heading our way by growing our own food and trying to become more self sufficient. I doubt it will make any real difference who we vote for.
Swift, I see you work for Tyson. I worked there with the USDA for several years and got tired of the long hours and lack of pay. I go to college now so I can earn my degree in nursing so I do agree with your point about the education and resources. Once I earn my degree and begin working as an RN I will be paid far better and work less hard than I ever did at Tyson Foods.
Swift...I have no class envy, I happen to be in the so called "higher class" if there is such a thing in Dexter. My husband and I are in the high income category but that doesn't mean we don't try to save money. I go to college and PAY for the classes myself, I get no pell grants but driving out of town everyday adds up even though I have money. So no, it is not a sin to be rich, but it is a sin to be greedy.
Mizzou_mom, class envy is not the answer to the high prices of gas and the price of oil. You sound like you think it's a sin to be rich. Read on down my comment to pom_mom. I'm here to tell you that socialism (equal distribution of wealth and government programs) is not the answer!!
Thankyou, Shannon!
Awhile back, I heard a young person say that Bush caused the day light savings time change. Some folks actually think the president has the same powers as a king! It's the Congress that makes the laws and that has veto over-ride power. Bottom line: It is not government's responsibility to make price and wage controls.
Bush has always had lots of money, and GREED is the root of the high gas prices. They know we have to buy it so they can jack up the price as high as they want, and they will keep doing that. We are going to have to start carpools, ride bikes and walk whenever we can. We have to try to fight back!
Yeah, I hope Bush and his buddies are happy. They are the reason gas prices are high, the reason 9-11 happened, the reason the housing market is suffering, the reason unemployment is so low (it is higher than under Clinton), and the reason for ALL that is wrong in dexterite's world. You get to vote in November for either Billary or Osama Obama and they will solve all of your troubles.
Mrs. Dolphin, I agree with you on this comment. We've got to keep the politicians on the right path, the will of the people who voted them in. Way too many of them are bought and paid for by the major party machines and PACs.
Thankyou, Administrator!
And so long as people in this country have the right to choose different sides, they will also continue to disagree on how things should be run, and by whom. It is our right to have strong beliefs on what and whom we believe in...but really...what good does it do? No matter how high the prices may go, we'll adjust. Some of us who bought larger vehicles when prices were low are now being blamed for the prices being high...but may I ask...don't you think people's lives and needs change? So don't you think, since prices are now so high, that we would like to get a smaller vehicle but can't? I'd like a job, but since I can't find one here, and since I can't afford to drive elsewhere, I have to deal with barely squeeking by until something changes. But if I got a job, I would start driving more, and then my demand would be higher, then supply would be less than demand...and so goes the vicious cycle over and over again. To break it is going to require some backwoods, real-to-life thinking...not some politician (on EITHER side) who, no matter what he believes in before he gets in, can be bought after. Everyone has a price...
Folks, I am VERY sorry my post came up 12 times!! I was using the Dexter library computer, and it kept showing that my comment had not been posted! A box kept coming up on the screen saying that the writing had been lost. I would go back and hit post but it never came up. Folks, I hate to be critical, but their computers are not reliable! So came up here to the Bloomfield library, clicked on Daily Statesman and realized, Oh my word, my comment had been posted 12 times! Again, I am so sorry!
Go ahead and trust big government, dexterite! We've had the New Deal, Fair Deal, New Frontier, and the Great Society under Democratic- Socialist presidents and Democratic-Socialist controlled congresses, and we haven't eliminated poverty. Liberalism is a disease nearly as bad as drug/alcohol addiction. Americans are too dependent on foreign oil, government programs, the UN, and the two propaganda tools: television news and the socialist institution known as public education. I betcha I get some flak on this statement, but I'm right!
And I'm not a Republican; I'm an independent conservative who despises the Democratic Party and is disgusted with the Republican Party.
looney, without liberals there would be no Soc Security or Medicare,,,,,,,,,, whar have you all contributed lately,, except for a failed 8 years.
Gina, are there no jobs closer? A less paying job might be better than driving all that distance. There are other opportunities- look for them!
I doubt the price of gas goes up to 7 bucks in 4 yrs. We've got the supply here in the USA. It's time to say no to the environmentalists and liberals in congress and start drilling our own oil and start building new refineries. Bio-deisel is the next step. In the mean time, some of us are going to have to do some sacrificing. But, we've got to vote true conservatives into congress and the White House, or we'll just continue our depenence on foreign oil.
Gina:
Yes, quit. It won't be long and we will be giving welfare recipients gas cards as well... Free housing, free food, and free Gas.
Dexterite:
Clueless liberal.
Staley:
Semi Clueless liberal.
Swift:
King of the board!
Hi How about $7.00 a gallon in 4 years. It is never gonna stop/ I drive 55 miles a day to work. I can not carpoole .What and I suppose to do ? Quit my job get on welfare?
Sorry folks! I didn't mean to post this twice but I got the posted website wrong the first time. I also thought it would be highlighted.
Interesting info about Obama's misleading ad.
pom_mom: The Bible doesn't say, "Money is the root of all evil." The Bible says, "The love of money [covetousness] is the root of all evil.
Here is a misconception that is used by socialists. They will say that being rich or having more than someone else is evil. Those who have more should pay a higher percentage of taxes becomes the mantra. In this verse of scripture, the teaching is that covetousness is the root of all evil. Covetousness can be a sin of poor and rich alike. Wanting what someone else has is covetousness. Marxism teaches that everybody should have an equal share of wealth. That is a teaching that is contrary to the Bible and is a source of class envy in our own country. Hey, if I have the education and resources and initiative that gets me rich, it is nobody's right to take from my riches to give to someone who has less. I'm glad I work for someone (Tyson Foods) who is richer than I am! After all, my employer has to be able to pay its employees!
I betcha, there's plenty of big oil folks down in Texas who are Democrats. I betcha Obama recieved some oil lobbyist money-http://www.fastcheck.org/elections-2008/obamas_oil_spill.html

The greedy traders right here in this country are to blame. They are running up the cost of fuel, and even worse, the price of grain to the extent people are starving to death in greater numbers than ever. I believe in free enterprise, but not when the common good is threatened. Money is the root of all evil and this proves it!!
check with my relatives in
Texas who own the wells, they're making huge profits, never in the history such profits and they love 'W' and would vote for him again.
As long as we tolerate career politicians being lobbied by big oil, the auto industry, etc., little change will occur. This isn't simply supply and demand. It's about money and power. Term limits and regulation are the issues we should be focused on. The system is corrupt and this is one of many problems that result from that. We are destined to implode if we "stay the course."
The U.S. Geological Service's estimate of the amount of Alaska oil that could be recovered economically -- that is, the amount likely to be profitably extracted and sold -- represents less than a year's U.S. supply.
It would take 10 years for any Arctic Refuge oil to reach the market, and even when production peaks -- in the distant year of 2027 -- the refuge would produce a paltry 1 or 2 percent of Americans' daily consumption.
Opening the Arctic Refuge to energy development is about transferring our public estate into corporate hands, so it can be liquidated for a quick buck.
What's next? Yellowstone?
Swift is correct with their comments. I don't think anyone could say it better. I don't think dexterite has a clue.
High gas prices have little to do with who's in office! Supply and demand is what influences the price of everything! When demand is greater than supply, prices go up. When supply is greater than demand, prices go down. The answer is less dependence on foreign oil and use available alternative energy sources. We have plenty of oil in Alaska, Texas, and off our shores. The problem is we have bowed to the demands of environmentalist extremists who care more for their own agenda than they do the American way of life. We must drill allow drilling of oil in our own backyard. The supply is here in our own country! Cut the tax on gasoline at the pump will help some. Actually we ought to cut taxes across the board anyway! Then we need to work on using available alternatives like bio-diesel from animal and plant fats. Ethanol is not a good source presently as it is raising the price of grain which is hurting the poultry business. I work at Tyson Foods and know that for a fact. Bush and his buddies really don't have any more influence on the price of oil than the Clintonistas do. That's just some liberal balony you might get from moveon.org or Clinton News Network (CNN). Instead of blaming it on oil companies, a part of Free Enterprise, we need to work on upping the use of supply to meet our demand.
I hope Bush and his buddies are happy.
