Campbell scores four in the eighth to thwart Bernie's comeback effort

Wednesday, April 30, 2008
BERNIE -- Bernie rallied in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game a 4-4 only to see Campbell storm back in the first extra inning to score four times and take a 8-4 win over the Mules on their home field Tuesday.

"We battled back today (Tuesday) to extend the game, but we're struggling some right now," Bernie coach Jason Long said. "The kids showed some toughness today, so I think we're going to be all right."

Bernie got a solid start from Jake Welch, but when Long turned the ball over to Silas Dill in the fifth, the Mules were down 4-0. Dill recorded eight strikeouts during his 3 2/3 innings of work as the Mules scored twice in the sixth (4-2) then added two in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game.

Campbell put the first two batters on in the eighth, but Dill got two outs before things came unraveled for the Mules. Cale Weeks connected for a 3-run homer, then Joe Campbell followed with a single, took second on an error and scored on a base hit by Eugene Powers.

The loss over shadowed home runs by Bernie's Dustin Cluck and Welch. Quinton Stevens also added an RBI hit for the home team.

Bernie slipped to a 8-6 record this spring.

The Mules will next be in action when they will play an unusual doubleheader. Bernie will first play at Holcomb, then will come home for a make-up game with the Advance Hornets. Friday the Mules will take on the Gideon Bulldogs
