Donald Glantz, Jr. was taken by ambulance at about 9:30 p.m. to be airlifted from the local airport to the Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis, where he remains in critical condition.
According to family members, Glantz suffered head trauma in the accident that required surgery yesterday in the Memphis hospital.
There were no eyewitnesses to the accident, but police surmise that Glantz, while headed east in the 700 block of Chautaqua Street, ran off the edge of the roadway and his front bicycle tire struck the edge of a concrete driveway, throwing him off of the bike and onto the concrete.
Squelching rumors that Glantz may have been struck by a hit and run driver, Dexter Police Chief Paul Haubold confirmed, "There is no evidence at this time that the bicycle came into contact with a motor vehicle. We continue to investigate the accident, but nothing points to this being an instance of hit and run."
Glantz was reportedly returning from a trip to a local super market and was carrying groceries at the time of the accident.

Just so everyone knows, Don passed away at 3:52pm today, May 11. His sister Kim called me to let me know. Hopefully the police will look into this a little deeper know, I would live to give them my statement so that they can find out what really happened.

Are the authorities investigating this as a hit and run YET? I heard it was a pickup that hit him.

this man didn't fall from a steep cliff
Also that night I seen at least two small children watching everything that was going on at the bike accident. I really wished that parents would be mindful about how traumatizing accidents (especially this one) can be to small children. Also it puts the children at risk as well. So can parents please be more mindful of this? Thanks
I live just a couple of houses down from where the accident occured. I noticed today when I came home that there was two policeman at the accident site. I believe they are investigating it. I wished I had heard something that night but I didn't. I hope that the police will be able to find out what exactly happened. Also in the paper is stated that the guy hit the edge of the driveway and that is what caused the accident. I don't think so. I drive past there everyday and I personally don't think that anyone could substain that much injury. I watched when the ambulance arrived and I also seen the city taking a power washer truck to wash the blood off the road. I personally don't believe anyone could sustain that much injury just from falling off his bike. Also I can say that people fly down Chautauqua. We have children down that road and it angers me that people drive as fast as they do. I can see where it would be easy for someone to get hit on our road especially at night.
I was one of the first people to Don after the accident, and there is no way he just fell off his bike and the injuries that he has. I think the police need to contact me and the other people and get a formal statement from us, which as of today, May 8, they have not and they have our names and phone #'s.
Actually my ex brother in law died from injuries resulting from a bike wreck. He was riding on the bike trail in Cape with out a helmet. He fell from the steep cliff and hit his head on a large rock, resulting in the swelling of his brain and he died a week later. Do not underestimate how serious a bicycle wreck can be, that is why we wear helmets, no matter how ridiculous people may think it is. it is a shame this happened and my prayers are with this man and his family.
This is very hard to believe that this man could substain the following injuries from falling off his bike. A crushed skull, 7 inch cut on his head, both eye sockets broke, his cheek bone smashed, upper jaw broke, the bone above his lip broke, his teeth will be wired together. And the PD are telling you that he ran off the road and fell off. Why doesn't the police ask the people who found him and see what they say.
Keep this man in your prayers. A head injury on a bicycle is just as serious as on a motorcycle in a slow speed fall. Head trauma can be very severe from the height of a bicycle seat. 40-50 G's and that is without a lot of forward speed. Make sure your kids wear one of those funky looking helmets. Better to look a little weird than to bust your grape.
