John Matthews
The Stoddard County Sheriff's Department is reporting the arrest of a Malden man accused of selling marijuana.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff's Office, the arrest came following information pointing to John David Matthews dealing drugs in the Bernie area.

Following further investigation, arrangements were made to buy drugs from Matthews.

He was arrested during the deal and approximately one-quarter pound of marijuana and drug paraphernalia were seized.

Matthews is charged with the Class C felony of distribution of a controlled substance (marijuana) and the Class A misdemeanor of possession of drug paraphernalia.

His bond was set at $75,000 cash only and he remains in jail at this time.

Nope, read it right and stand by my statement too. I hope no one hears me say, "I would rather my kid smoke pot than heroin". Hope your cleanup continues to go well but stop comparing doing this drug or dat drug and this felony with that felony. Make good choices and obey da law brotha.

Firecracker is a funny dude.

So is Bon and Layne.

Hoon, I am assuming you have never seen a person on heroin, crack, meth. or marijuana. What I said is neither sick nor sad. Out of these 4 drugs the least harmful one I have witnessed in my life is marijuana.

I would NEVER want either of my sons to do drugs. I just merely said as a parent IF my kids were doing drugs and I had an option to chose which one they would do it would be marijuana. I think you only read the part where I said that, but I can see you didn't read the next sentence >>>>> "Don't get me wrong, I don't want my kids doing any drugs."

I am a recovering meth. addict who has been clean for years so I KNOW first hand what drugs can do. My children know it very well.....

I think the most important thing we can do is to teach our children about these drugs and what harmful effects come from using them.

The world will never be rid of the dealers so, it is up to us to make a difference.

Sweet Firecrackers....I hope I never am heard saying "I would rather my kid smoke pot than do heroin.....How sick and how sad.

Firecracker...you just stole from a freshman History book and High Times.

Exhale.

Oh my gosh! I'm moving back to D-town this summer. I would have though after 20 years of being away things surly would have changed. After all..the town has grown but apparently the minds haven't. Black, white, red or green, we're all in this together! Remember, it's one race..the HUMAN RACE. Some do good things, others not so good. We have to choose who to associate with and what actions to take. Live and let live. Why do ya'll have to be so cynical spitting your hate all over the place? You know..if we let the power of love over come the love of power, the world would be a better place. This John dude was selling a little weed, so what? I agree we should legalize it or at least decriminalize it. It's not the gateway to more harmful drugs like my parents thought it was. If some of you more narrow minded people would just relax and read up on Marijuana and it's history you would see it's many benefits. We just need to teach our younger generation to respect it and not get all stupid with it.

Wow......... a lot of different views here.

I don't condone drugs but as a parent I would much rather know my kid is smoking pot vs. heroin or anything else much worse. Don't get me wrong, I don't want my kids doing any drugs.

But whether he was black or white makes no difference, he was selling it right there to Bernie residents. Can't sell something without a buyer...... What color were they????

I can't blame his parents for his actions or education or lack of if that is the case, no more than I could blame the buyers there in Bernie for the same reasons.

And Tupac is dead so let him rest in peace.

I have to again agree with MikeM68. Rather be knowing pot smokers than dealing with break-ins from whites, blacks or any other race cause they need money.

Just legalize the crap and get it over and done with. There's too many other serious things as someone stated above, that our tax paying money needs to be spent on, besides housing pot sellers and smokers.

hoon the only thoughts I have are my own I steal nothing if you share my thoughts then good for you, if not then thats your problem not mine. Don't call me a thief. backwardx......ummmmm........whites are largely responsible for? How largely? Because the black people of Africa sold their own into slavery. So I'd say it is an equal responsibility there. Also if I remember right, alot of our fellow men fough their own relatives for the freedom of black people. Therefore I think the whites paid their debt a long time ago. The blacks of today did not go through any of the mistreatment that their ancestors did. I grant some blacks get racial mistreatment still today but at the sametime there are black community members that mistreat white people. I say it all needs to stop and it's about time. I am pretty sick and tired of all this he done she done racial bs.

Yo...What's up Dead Rockers? Mr. Mojo Risin here. Hey, Rick Allen...What has 9 arms and SUCKS?!? That's right...Def Leppard.

How bout this John Matthews guy. Did you see his mug shot? His neck barely fits between the lines. Apparently you DO get the munchies from pot.

Hey, Backward Dork, since there are several thousands of black millionaires in this country, do NOT preach or imply any kind of "lack of education" or especially oppression it makes you look more idiotic than my spelling. Just b/c a guy decides to wear his pants below his butt doesn't mean he is oppressed...it means he's lazy! And, or course, it means he wants to be a gangsta...too short.

BTW backward x - where'd you get that degree in "sleuthin" cause you got it all figured - what a d.a.!!

-- Posted by Rick Allen on Tue, Jun 3, 2008, at 5:04 PM

It seems to me that thebackwardx has a lot of boxed up anger inside him, and for that I feel sorry for you. I am glad that you are enjoying life in San Fransico. I lived out there for several years and it is such a beautiful place. I would like for you to explain to me how the "white man", as you put it, is the reason for black poverty and lack of education. And secondly, are you sure that layne staley and all of the other "bigots" are from Dexter. Because if not, aren't you being a bigot as well. Just curious.

-- Posted by BonScott on Tue, Jun 3, 2008, at 11:14 AM

Way to go Backwards Xss. Not close to the same Greer and if I lived in Fagus, I would be Hugh Hefner brotha!

Smoke 'em if you got 'em SoCal.....exhale.

I'm going to take me and and my small status (never heard it called that before) and head to Wendy's for a Biggie Small FF!

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Tue, Jun 3, 2008, at 11:05 AM

It looks like "Bobby Greer" is a Daily Statesman employee rather than the Greer insurance guy I was thinking of.

If Bobby isn't involved with the insurance company then I retract my remark against that company and apologize.

The rest of my comment stands.

-- Posted by thebackwardx on Tue, Jun 3, 2008, at 9:42 AM
Response by Bobby Greer:
Apology accepted thebackwardx...... I can only wish I were in my mid-twenties! And no, I am not affiliated with any insurance companies.

layne stately and other biggots:

I am sure it makes you feel like successful men to make fun of a black man for the poverty and endemic lack of education that our white ancestors are largely responsible for.

You guys thing you're hot stuff with your small Dexter social status and small Dexter businesses, but your financial situations and your SEMO degrees are as pathetic to the wealthy as this black man is to you.

You might feel like you're rich here, but if you moved to San Francisco you'd be lower-middle class.

Get over yourself you heartless monsters. This man didn't hurt anyone, and he has emotions and family like anyone else. Wait for the day that your child is arrested for drugs and then theorize on the education of his parents.

And I saw the name "Greer"... I won't get specific, but if you think the mid-twenties Greer hasn't used drugs, you're misinformed.

And I'll be sure to tell everyone I know what a bunch of clowns are involved with that insurance company.

Since this topic is so heated with racial tension, since mrs. dolphin needs a good laugh (and some fiber) and since Dexter is home of famous ribs - thought you might enjoy this clip...

So Cal Now -

If you want us to read this stuff - make your posts shorter and a lot funnier...btw- smoke some more pot - and I am sure you will because California knows how to party.

BonScott -

When you saw Tupac at McDonald's did he look like he was about hit it and quit it or did he mainly just pull up quick to get wif it?

The Government spends literally 100's of millions of your taxpayers dollars pursuing, arresting, and keeping in jail all these big bad pot dealers. I believe it makes more sense to legalize pot, control the sales and tax it like cigarettes (yes the cigarettes that are killing millions a year legally with the Government's blessing) and allow entrepreneurs like John Mathews to make a living as a business owner/salesman. By the way, I do not condone pot smoking. I simply believe taxpayers money could be better spent chasing real criminals, like MikeM68 mentioned, ones that are out crawling in other people's houses and stealing their possessions. If an adult wants to smoke pot and pay for it why should we spend millions to stop them instead of making millions from their "pursuit of happiness"? A portion of the money collected could be used to educate children of the negative consequences of pot smoking in similiar fashion as cigarettes...or we could continue to pursue this victimless crime costing taxpayers millions, wasting law enforcement efforts, while continuing to allow people to buy cigarettes instead, since it's legal (and costing the rest of us millions in health care costs). It can only kill them!

I think I jive with ya layne. Matter of fact, I just saw Tupac at McDonald's....or is that a song? I don't know. I do know I'm going to stay away from Bernie. What exactly are they growing in those cotton fields.

-- Posted by BonScott on Mon, Jun 2, 2008, at 10:59 PM

goat lady,

Regardless of hoon's remark, you are pretty much right on track with it. As a token of my appreciation, I have provided clarification of an earlier term that we use in my hood:

For shizzle my nizzle is an expression of the streets meaning that, "I concur wholeheartedly my african american brethren."

You dig jive turkey?

Tori 07 - if you like to puff and pass, we too are thankful for your decision to move...

Close minded about what? I am just curious.

-- Posted by BonScott on Mon, Jun 2, 2008, at 6:28 PM

WOW!!!! I am so thankful for moving out of the bootheel and away from such close-minded people. I understand that not all of the SEMO region folks feel the same, but it sure seems as though alot do.

-- Posted by tori07 on Mon, Jun 2, 2008, at 1:38 PM

Firecracker: Check earlier posts besides your own and stop stealing thoughts. That ranks right behind peddling dope and crawlin' in my window.

Goat: Staley is the man to answer the shizzle nizzle bedizzle rizzle manizzle question. He is from the hood. Don't underestimate the level of thinking here Goat...we ain't all here for your entertainment.

BTW: Did this guy, John, play football?

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Mon, Jun 2, 2008, at 8:48 AM

oops! What's a shizzle or a nizzle?

Or can you explain that w/0 getting kicked off the site?? Mmm...how will we know if you DID explain it and then it got deleted??? Such a dilemma...

-- Posted by goat lady on Mon, Jun 2, 2008, at 8:07 AM

Well, I don't know if I dare touch this wild topic....I can tell it's totally outta my comfort zone... but, johndeeregirl, all the comments about graduating w/ a Phd, etc, are just a continuation of the comedy routine started on Bobby Greer's blog. These guys get goin' on a theme...and they just roll along, having a good time. Still, they're fun to argue with.

What IS a whizzle?

-- Posted by goat lady on Mon, Jun 2, 2008, at 8:02 AM

I think the girl farmer reminds me of a friend of mine, her name is Sheena.

-- Posted by Rick Allen on Mon, Jun 2, 2008, at 12:21 AM

who said he was a thief? I never did. All because a guy sells dope does not mean he's selling to kids. I have 2 teenagers and they can get more dope from their peers than an adult. I don't do drugs so nope I don't need anything from anyone pushing that stuff but thanks. How do you johndeeregirl get me saying I'd rather see him selling that than stealing the stuff I worked hard for, calling him a thief? I just stated that I would rather catch him selling dope THAN crawling into my window or breaking into my door. I am not accusing no-one of nothing. I don't believe for a minute that it's a racial issue with him either. If a white guy had been caught peddling dope he would have gotten busted with his mug in the paper too. Have you all seen, or forgotten, the story of the 13 people rounded up across stoddard county? I seem to recall alot of white folks involved in that bust, or were they actually black folks, on the Michael Jackson skin treatment plan? hmmmmmmmmmmm

-- Posted by MikeM68 on Mon, Jun 2, 2008, at 12:07 AM

That Madina is a Monster. One time she bought some weed off a guy in Bernie, he got busted, charged with a felony and some racists called him an idiot drug dealer. They were then called out by a girl farmer who drove tractors.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Mon, Jun 2, 2008, at 12:03 AM

Um, yes excuse me Tone but I would like you and Mike to push your dreds back and let me tell you one thing, when John goes to prison he'll be the queen if you know what I mean, he may even get made to do the wild thing... really your whole little community over there should start to "pass, on grass".

JDG - paint a water tower while your at it... I am with Bon Scott, I don't get the whole racism thing either.

-- Posted by dimebag darrell on Sun, Jun 1, 2008, at 11:56 PM

According to the song "Funky Cold Madina" Bon Scott is correct. It was the 80's and ToneLoc was down with the ladies.

-- Posted by layne staley on Sun, Jun 1, 2008, at 11:55 PM

I'm still trying to figure out how any of these comments were racist. Maybe a little extreme, but not racist. Johndeeregreen needs to calm down.

-- Posted by BonScott on Sun, Jun 1, 2008, at 9:35 PM

But I thought Sheena was a MAN!

-- Posted by BonScott on Sun, Jun 1, 2008, at 9:32 PM

I agree with Mad Mike. Why throw the book at JDM for selling a "natural growing herb"?

Mad Mike: I understand it is a little frustrating when you are working all week 9 to 5 for your money and then the weekend comes a junkie steals your coin. One time, this happened to a friend of mine named Sheena. Sheena ended up buying a few guard dogs to keep the crazies out...know what I mean. She called one of them Spuds and the other was a mixed breed name Alex. She or he never got violated again. Word on the street is Sheena is looking to sell. Let me know if you might be interested. What is a shizzle?

-- Posted by ToneLoc on Sun, Jun 1, 2008, at 5:03 AM

I don't think John's priorities are messed up at all. He is a GREAT guy selling drugs to our kids and trying to get what he wants. JD Gal, what is messed up about that.

Staley, for all we know you are black.....this doesn't seem to be a race issue, just an idiot issue.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Sun, Jun 1, 2008, at 12:07 AM

It's IRONIC to label somebody racist when you don't even know them! John may be a good guy, but when you get busted for pot and it's in the Statesman, I'm gonna keep it real...and not on the DL...for shizzle my nizzle?

-- Posted by layne staley on Sat, May 31, 2008, at 9:13 PM

shannonhoon, you are such a sweetheart. bet you hear that all the time.

Racist is all i can say! If this man were white no one would have made a comment about him breaking in houses. I personally know this man. He is not a bad man. He simply has his priorities a little messed up just like lots of white people i know. Who cares if his parents graduated at all? That has nothing to do with him selling drugs. Some people grow up poor or in bad neighborhoods and that is the only way they learned to survive or get what they want. I am not saying it is okay, but i don't think he should be judged for being black. There was no comments about the parents made on the article about the county wide bust. Which just goes to show that was a racist comment!!!

MiseryMom: I will be a paycheck neither of John's parents gradeeated with honors. Nothing Racist about it....check out the country-wide bust and I will place the same bet about ALL 13 caught there.

As far as Playa Hatin' Degrees go, John was hoping to be the Dean one day and will get a second chance with this minor offense. His street cred has only grown now.

Firecracker is thankful he is selling pot because he thinks that should be legal like beer. He also knows for a fact that John or any of his drug selling homies have never robbed anyone or stolen anything that folks like him work hard for....would consider betting that this is untrue also.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Sat, May 31, 2008, at 8:23 AM

I'm gonna guess that neither of John's parents graduated summa cum laude from an ivy league school. Although, he probably still got his PhD; Playa hatin' Degree...oh no I didn't!

Wow,racist much? Real classy of ya staley. You don't know anything about this man or his family. He broke the law but there is no reason to make comments like this one.

-- Posted by mizzou_mom on Sat, May 31, 2008, at 2:47 AM

Oh before anyone takes that the wrong way I am not condoning his selling of dope I just rather see him on the street selling a natural growing herb than in my house taking my stuff.

-- Posted by MikeM68 on Sat, May 31, 2008, at 12:19 AM

guess would probably be the right term for that considering you just never know, I don't do drugs nor alcohol but have seen the effects of both firsthand. Alcohol has worse effects than marijuana, but the other drugs are worse than alcohol, especially methamphetamine. I have this to say, better he was selling dope than breaking into your house and robbing you of everything you have worked so hard for.

The medical benefits were confiscated at the scene of the crime.
