According to Bloomfield Chief of Police Jason Curtman, following the tip, Officer Travis Stafford observed the suspect driving his vehicle through a stop sign and pulled him over.
Following a search of the vehicle, police discovered 11-1 ounce bags of marijuana and a set of digital scales used for weighing the drugs. Police also seized two-ounces of marijuana from someone the accused had sold to only moments before.
Police arrested Michael Wayne Houston, 34 of Bloomfield, and charged him with distribution of a controlled substance. Brian Eugene Turner, 34 of Bloomfield, was also charged with distribution of a controlled substance. Both men are currently housed in Stoddard County Jail with bond set at $125,000.
Curtman said that Asst. Chief Cheryl Malone had been working on this case for quite some time when the tip came in.
Police value the marijuana at approximately $1,235, or 12 ounces between the 13 bags collected.
Curtman said he was very pleased with his department's performance and quick action. He said he also wanted to thank the Stoddard County Sheriff's Department for their work in transporting the suspects.
"Cheryl [Malone] is an outstanding investigator and has been an asset to our department," Curtman said Monday. "Stafford has only been with the department for a short time, but we're very glad to have him."
Houston and Turner will both be arraigned this week.

Bury me softly in this womb..........
I give this part of me for you.........
Sand rains down and her I sit...
Holding rare flowers in her tomb............in bloom.
I can talk about what I want to....so there. nah, nahnah, nah, nah...
Cherry....not everything we type is intelligent, but 99% of it is. And don't worry about disrespecting anyone....we all have thick skin.
72, stop talking so much about something you didn't do.
BootheelBillWalton, everything we talk about is HIGHLY intelligent. Don't you ever forget that.
Shannonhoon, no, my nickname is not Cherry. I waasn't trying to be disrespectful of those who are looking to discuss old memories. I just enjoy a little intelligent debate now and then. I still don't believe the bond was too high for the individual who was a repeat offender. Possibly too high for the other individual though.
Fact is I didn't smoke any pot and then spent 30 years in the Marine Corps...and I did run around in a lot of circles...screaming and shouting.
BH RED Head.....is your nickname Cherry?
The sirens are blasting my already ringing from too many concerts ears. The redhead has called us on being OFF topic.
72 I wasn't the one mentioning the waterboy thing.....could care less. Also could care less that you wrestled or ran around in circles. Agree about the memories thing being priceless for all of us and that is what counts. Seriously tried to make an objective observation about the FB teams, having not played for either but having seen both and knowing people on both teams.
You really shouldn't have smoked so much pot....might have lettered all four years in track and played FB more than one year.
BootheelRedHead...as if this little forum is a world-shattering gathering of giants.
shannonhoon....Nope, I wasn't the waterboy...they didn't have one. I was a wrestler and trackster....and was for sure no STAR. During football I was usually up in the stands drinking Boonsefarm Strawberry Hill. Sorry to bust your fantasy of me as a superstar. :-) I did play football my senior year though...and WHO in their right mind waits until they are a senior?
Okay..let's get back on track for BootheelRedHead. I think they should increase the bond so that these guys stay in jail longer than the Pit Bull fighters. 12 oz of weed is the beginning of the end for Dexter and Bloomfield and the bootheel way of life.......but I wonder if it's the same kind of weed that was there when I was in high school between '68-'72.
I still have my Class of '72 Bearcat Letter Jacket in my closet...I don't know why it fits rather "snug" now but when I look at it the memories do return. 4 year wrestler and 3 year track.
Sorry I upset folks about Wheeler. I'm sure the memories are the same for you guys as mine are to me.
The topic regarding the newspaper article has nothing whatsoever to do with the topics you are discussing. If you want to remember old times get on topix or somewhere else that was designed for just that. Stick to the subject at hand or post somewhere else.
72 is hilarious. Beating Hayti 2-0 speaks for itself. I guess they would have held Earl Wheeler to an extra point and won. I have acknowledged that Bland's teams of the 60's, Mathis' teams of the 70's and Wheelers teams of the 80's were all awesome...that is fact....but anyone seeing footage from all would be crazy not to bet on Air Wheeler and Co. Too much talent, speed and power.
And stop calling the lady working at WalMart a troll. 72, still here and I am a nobody.
I bet bearcat72 was the waterboy for those teams. Not a glorified position like quarterback, but hey, somebody has to do it.
I think I did see a little troll greeting people at the door at Wal-Mart. It must have been shannonhoon.
Your first post was as a troll. I would guess you are probably a resentful "nobody" in Dexter...IF you are still there. Do you work at Walmart?
Oh How mean spirited calling me a troll. So, was David Mathis the QB in Dexter's 2-0 win over Hayti?
Darrell, smoke 'em if you got 'em.
shannonhoon..you are now sounding like a troll. I do not FEED trolls.
uhhh... try to stay on topic - pot, herb, jane, reefer, hashish, dope, ganja, dimebag, joints, spliffs.
How about music that has to do with marijuana:
Don't Bogart that Joint by Country Joe
Joker by Steve Miller Band (from your era bearcat...
Just for the record:
I think marijuana is a lot worse than trying to kill someone - by far - and dog fighting is even worse.
Bearcat...not ripping a team of Cats, and understand that it is tough to compare teams from different eras, but have seen video of the team from the 70's and that does tell a story. Would not be a competitive contest. Congrats on a big win against Lutheran South and making it to the final state championship game. Was this the year that Dexter beat Hayti 2-0? Also curious as to what position you played?
shannonhoon..kinda difficult to respond to a mean-spirited statement. I was attempting to reminisce a little bit for some of the "older" Bearcats and you choose to blast the team. Thanks Pal. By the way...you can't bring a team from the PAST into the FUTURE to see how they would have done. You play who you play. You would have had to be in Dexter when the Bearcats beat St. Louis, Lutheran South, on a Saturday afternoon. That 29-26 WIN sent Dexter to the final state championship game....we were soundly thumped by Chillicothe...and the game was played in Marshall.
A little kindness rather than serious criticism of a great team would go a long way. So what if the "Wheeler" team was really better. That wasn't REALLY my point.
I agree with ya hoon. I would say it's not even close on who was the best athlete at DHS. When you go to a major university to play two sports(football and baseball), you got to be doing something pretty good. I don't know about defensively, but that team of the early 70s couldn't touch them on the offensive end.
Bon:
Bearcat 72 thinks they are the best because the beat up on Chaffee, Hayti, and other second rate high school teams back when the schedule looked like mediocre 8th grade schedule.
Would have loved to see that team compete against Mayfield KY, Graves County KY, Hillsboro, Marshall, Sumner....let alone Jackson and New Madrid County.
I have seen video of the David Mathis led team and was fortunate to see all of the Earl Wheeler era games....and though not easy and possibly not fair to compare eras, the Cats of the 80's had more talent and were better.
And please don't say David Mathis, now David Mathis DDS, was better than Earl Wheeler......now that would be funny. Wheeler was the best athlete thus far to wear a Cat uni.
bearcat72, I am curious to why you think that team was the best football team in Dexter history.
I have to agree with MikeM68 our system is totally messed up...I myself haven't gotten into trouble with the law, but I've known people who have and they were treated very unfair compared to others who had done worse things than they did. My opinion, they pick and choose....That's just my opinion...
Well I respect all the hard work and dedication that law enforcement officers put into their work and the following statement is not directed at any current law enforcement officials, but Stoddard county has seen it's fair share and then some of corrupt law enforcement officials. OK that being said onto this story, Bloomfield officers look like they just solved a major case, like maybe a 20yr old cold case murder investigation. I agree when a natural plant is found in your possession and you get a higher bond or stiffer sentence than some violent offender, it's definately a sad day and shows exactly where priorities lie. It's all a money game and people wonder why the world is in the shape it's in. I got into a bit of trouble 15 yrs ago for drinking and driving, I had a job so they public defender said she would not use tax payers money to represent me. I WAS one of those tax payers, but instead she will represent some low life who decides to break into my home or car and steal from me, she would take my hard earned money that paid her salary and defend him. YES the legal system is screwed up and in a very sad state of affairs all the way around.
shannonhoon...OUR quarterback was David Mathis..now DDS...and he headed up the BEST Bearcat football team in Dexter history.
David Mathis, Greg Matthews, Gary and Vic Trammel, Jerry Jarrells (sp), Ralph Thurston, Bruce Hindman, Terry Gibson, Big Dan Smith, Gary Christian, Barry Buchanan, Mike Ward, Larry Jones, ....and my memory is starting to fail me.... :-)
Can any old Bearcats help me out here? We don't want Shannonhoon thinking we didn't have the BEST.
BonScott,
The "Pig" is long gone. The "Dexter Queen" is still there, on the other side of the road, where you can get a "Pig in the Basket". Just wanted to get that straight. :-)
Swollen_Thumb, I am sorry but your logic does not make sense. The crime that one of the men was arrested for is the SAME crime he has been picked up for in the past, twice. Evidently he did not learn his lesson. Do you not believe in the law of repeat offenders as it pertains to DWIs? It's basically the same thing. Bottom line is this: It is illegal! We can argue the point of whether or not it should be legal all day long but right now it is NOT legal.
Bearcat and Peace......watch some home movies every now and then, or dial an old girlfriend or boyfriends's number. Stop boring me with your outdated references.....next thing you know, you will act like your QB was better than Earl Wheeler.
peace2u, I never would have guessed that you toked with 420 on the end of your handle, clever. The Pig is still there, so enjoy your return to D-town, not much has changed. You better stay away from Bloomfield though. Happy toking.
Just want to say thank you to Bearcat 72! I don't know who you are, I graduated in 1979. But I bet you know my brother Joe. Thank you for the stroll down memory lane...I know everyone of the people you've mentioned in your post. One was my neighbor! Unfortunately I missed the era of The Pig. I believe it was turned into Taco Town when I was racing up and down the strip in my 66 Mustang. However A&W was still there. Me and 4 of my friends got busted for seeing how fast we could circle the place while tossing our pony miller bottles at the trash can that sat around back! I'm moving back to Dexter soon and can't wait to shake things up, awaken some souls, open some eyes and broaden some views!! Thanks you for the smile Bearcat72...you rock!
I vote...and I toke!
I say, Good Job! Keep up the good work!
BootheelRedHead, in my opinion, the punishment should reflect the crime, not the reputation of the perpetrator. By your logic, someone who spent 10 years in jail for grand theft auto, turned his life around, and got a speeding ticket should receive an excessive bond as well. IMO, that's not justice, and if they have knowledge that we don't know about, maybe they should operate a little more transparent than they do, because they work for us, and ARE subject to our judgment, whether they want to admit it or not.
As far as the legality of pot goes. It should be legal for numerous reasons. I wouldn't use it, legal or not, but I don't smoke cigarettes either and I don't drink very often. I want it to be legal because as long as it's on the black market, teenagers will continue to drop out of school, and make lucrative money selling it, 100% tax free. And this is at the expense of honorable, hard-working people's tax dollars.
If you disagree with me, at least try to respect my opinion, like I try to respect yours.
BootheelRedHead...you are entirely too serious. Of course these guys ALWAYS have a history..and most deserved to be slammed into the slammer for quite awhile. Still $125K for 12 oz of cheap weed is a lot and basically keeps them in jail..and I'm sure that is the reason for it. I still say they should be doing LOTS of community service at the dog shelter...and have something to show for their misdeeds. (I would be glad to come supervise their efforts)
Jim Morrison...Dexter was quite the town way back when....as for me, I was in high school from '68 - '72 and there were more muscle cars than you could count...just so happens I still remember what many people drove back then and trying to have a little fun with it. The lucky people are thoise who stuck around. Don't get me wrong, I have had a great ride since leaving Dexter but would buy a home and few acres in a heartbeat if my better half was on-board with it. One of these days...one of these days.
Take care all...I'm sorry if I made any old classmates mad.....well maybe a little bit sorry, but not too much. :-)
I, too noticed that the bond was pretty high. However, if you will search casenet for these individuals you will find that they both have a number of case listings. Houston has two prior charges for possession. You can't always take something at face value without doing a little research. Law enforcement has knowledge that we, as public individuals, do not have.
Man, your'e quite the little name-dropper there Bearcat72. But, I do agree, Dexter was fun when I was in High School.
As for "Dead Minnows" (a.k.a. Pot), I don't know. The local authorities should quit looking for it b/c it's too expensive. They should only arrest or confiscate when found on someone like this incident.
The Federal authorities should definitely quit searching for it b/c it costs Billions of dollars every year. The federal gov. should secure all production, distribution, etc. and sell it. The illegal trafficing would go away like bootlegging did and maybe they could sell it for $100 a pack or something ridiculous and help pay some of their debts back.
I see deaths every week on the news from drunk driving, but I have NEVER in my life seen a death from stoner driving. I imagine b/c they're too lazy to drive and just call for a pizza.
Gypsyho.
It is also not as bad as your cheap striper name.
I think it is pretty sad, that someone who is charged with attempted murder has a lesser bond, than someone with less than $2,000.00 street value of marijuana. But then I guess someones life is not worth as much. Come on folks, get real. Start making the law enforcement in Stoddard county wake up and realize smoking pot is NOT near as bad as trying to kill someone.
Holy smokes..."Both men are currently housed in Stoddard County Jail with bond set at $125,000."
Please tell me this will be reduced so that Stoddard County officials don't truly demonstrate that they are smoking some of the stash that was confiscated.
Just sayin.....
I'm sure glad we didn't go to Bloomfield with that trunk load of Boonesfarm Strawberry Hill and beer we had in the trunk of Johnny Sifford's 1969 Roadrunner back in 1971. We drove to Tennessee to smuggle that stuff into Dexter. Beer and wine age in Tennessee was 18...Dexter was still 21.
Man, we Dexter Bearcats were some desperados back then. I only had a '65 Mustang so it would not hold enough "loot". Harry Don Foster's GTO could hold a lot in it's trunk.
Remember guys...driving around..."The Pig" and "Dairy Queen" and then later the "A&W" and on through downtown and start all over again. Gas was about 23.9 cents per gallon. I can remember when it hit 18.9 during the "gas wars"...and many of you do too.
That dang rich Jerry Jarrell (Statesman Sports writer) had a brand new Red 396 Camaro and then a Gold and Black Olds 442. He and Glen Ellen were an item back then...kinda like David Mathis and Pam Hodder...but Gary won her heart in the end....maybe it was the dark Green '70 Chevelle..big block 396, 4-speed. And I am NOT trying to make anyone mad..but maybe a smile.
Anyway...sorry to go on a tangent. So...12 ounces of the wicked weed. Man, what a HAUL that was. Drug trafficker...I bet he needed gas money. I hope there were no stems or seeds in that grass. If a man is going to jail for awhile the least he can do is be able to say he was selling some good stuff.
Make him go to the animal shelter and scrub pens and walk the dogs for 6-months. From what I hear, that place is a much bigger CRIME than a few ounces of marijuana. I spent just 30 years in the Marine Corps.....I have lots of ways to make him come to Jesus..and not sell drugs anymore.
I love Dexter...and Bloomfield too. You guys are all very lucky to still be living there. For the new folks...it's the best place in the world and this boy WILL return someday.
God Bless.....and Easy Does It!!!
MASSIVE1000, why do you think it cost tax payers $5k to make this bust? And if it did(which I can't believe it would), who cares. You are getting drugs off the street, which is a good thing. I know it's "monkey grass" and people don't consider that a "harmful" drug, but it's a drug none the less and it is not legal. Good job BPD.
