Quick response on the part of the Dexter Police Department resulted in a 21-year-old local man, Travis Dean Burnett, being nabbed and charged with burglary in the first degree.

According to Police Chief Paul Haubold, officers responded to a call from the Michael Lasater home at 1210 State Highway AD in Dexter at about 2 a.m. in reference to a burglary in progress.

According to the report of Officer John Moore, police were advised that Cheryl Lasater had reported that she was awakened shortly before 2 a.m. by a noise in her bedroom and while still in her bed, saw a man with a flashlight rummaging through her jewelry cabinet inside her bedroom closet.

The police report states that Cheryl Lasater called out to the man, "Who are you?" and that the intruder casually exited the bedroom, walking slowly at first, but then ran from the home. Mike Lasater then awoke and left the home on foot in pursuit of the suspect while his wife placed the call to 911.

The Lasater's daughter was at home at the time of the intrusion, and was awakened at hearing by her mother's yelling at the individual, police said. The Lasater's daughter reportedly was headed toward her mother's voice when she witnessed a man exiting the home through the patio door in the living room of the home.

While Officer Moore reported to the Lasater home, Lt. Joel Dorr and Cpl. Wesley Warrick were enroute and witnessed an individual fitting the description of the intruder walking along the side of AD Highway, not far from the Lasater residence. The individual, according to the report, was "sweating profusely and moving around in an agitated manner as if nervous."

The two officers stopped and made contact with the subject, the report states, and immediately discovered a number of items on the individual that were later described by the Lasaters as missing property from their home.

Several jewelry items and a cell phone were found on the person of Travis Burnett, according to police, and following identification made by members of the Lasater family, Burnett was transported to the city jail and later transported to the Stoddard County Jail in Bloomfield facing charges of burglary in the first degree.

While it was estimated that just over $7000 worth of property was taken from the Lasater home, Dexter Police report that all but about $1000 worth of the stolen property was recovered.

The Lasater family credits the immediate response of the Dexter Police Department with the capture of the alleged intruder in the early morning hours of Thursday.

"It seemed as if I had barely dialed 911," Cheryl Lasater said, "and there was an officer at my door."

"Officer Moore secured our residence and even after the other officers had placed located Burnett walking on highway, the officer made an entire search of our house and secured the area."

"During what was a very disturbing circumstance, we felt that we were in the best of hands and were very impressed with the professional manner in which every aspect of this was handled."

Burnett remains in custody under a cash only bond of $25,000.

Soldier....Sooooooooooldier...under command.

Solder....Sooooooooolder...fighting, the Lord's battle plan.

Great lyrics by Stryper......those guys were awesome and doing drugs and drinking all along the way. Rock ON!!!!!!!!!!!

Travis needs to find and cold place to sleep, some toilets to clean with a Qtip, some manure to shovel, and some cold cuts to eat.

After that, he might need to stumble across religion..

Travis needs a lot of help but most of all he needs to find the Lord. Rather any of you people know it or not he was the one who found his mother. That is when he started going off the deep end.

He needs prayer and God not a bunch of people trying to be his judge.

Just remember you will be judged someday for what you do and in God's eyes sin is sin. There is no little sin and big sin.

Gypsy....that is awful.....Grow a pair and lets stop catering to these crooks and drug dealers and PieceO's soaking this country. Screw 'em....you break laws and you need to pay. A great band once wrote a song called Lay It Down and that is what we need to do.....the law that is....not Dr. Phil and Opera CRAP!

gypsy,

Your weak-willed response is typical these days. A growing number of idiots do stupid sh*t to law abiding citizens who are expected to then hold their hand to recovery (which all us of get to pay for btw).

Travis should have to pay society back. Not through jail time, but through hard work. I'm talking manual labor programs to better the community. This would be helpful and also serve as a real deterrent to crime.

I'm layne staley and I say, "Get to work criminals!"

I just checked 12 of my neighbors and got 6 cases of beer, 3 bottles of wine, and no drugs, although didn't ask for their prescription drugs. I'm not being judgemental, I just stated the fact that this idiot is a pieceOpoopoo. Have no tolerance for being nice about the very people who bring down our society and would qualify for the limited breeding program.

Why so judgemental about this young man, ladies and gentleman?

What he did was wrong and it could have ended much differently. What Travis needs is help with his problems, hopefully he will get long-term drug treatment to straighten up his life.

Consequently, his father has straightened up his life and was doing well unless something has changed recently.

As far as the Dexter community goes -- hurrah for the Dexter Police for acting so quickly and picking up Travis. But citizens of Dexter get your heads out of the sand, there is much more happening here than Travis just breaking into this house for jewelery and such. He was breaking in for things he could sell for money for drugs. Those things that much of the Dexter community likes to pretend is not there. Drug and alcohol addiction is in 1 out of every 10 homes in Dexter and if you don't believe me, just start checking with your neighbors.

I don't know what this guy needs except that looking at his mug shot he seems to be wishing that he was taller than 5'9". Click on it...the tongue tells all.

TuFF words Layne, but you do realize YOU would be the Man in the Box after that. YOU can't take the law into your own hands.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Mon, Jul 21, 2008, at 9:53 PM

Well, once again the system is broken. Bail and sentences are not consistent with the crimes being committed. Let's at least pass a law that says if somebody breaks in, then you are not liable for the beating he is about to receive. We'll call it the law of swift justice.

I'm layne staley and if you break into my house, you'll need a FACELIFT when it' over or I'll just put you in the DIRT.

All I have to say is, "soap on a rope" for those three. Good luck to all, they deserve to spend a lengthy time in the crossbar motel.

After hearing about this burglary , I looked into Travis Dean Burnett's criminal history as reported in public records. I am very angry that this man is still on the streets. It looks like the Dexter police are doing their job...but that the Stoddard County Court system is not.

This family's life will never be the same. Their home was violated and possibly their lives endangered. Can you imagine being awakened by a strange man rummaging thru your closet? That fear is enough. She knew her husband was safe , because he was there beside her. But she did not know if her daughter was safe , sleeping in another room.

This young man should be put away for a very long time.

Get this guy an agent...TBD is straight gangsta.

As Eazy E once said:

Grabbed the door and it's locked so

Eazily made my way to the window.

Lift it up slow, cause it take timin',

Looked around and then I climbed in.

Once inside, I start takin',

'cause you know there's no time for shakin'.

Get what you're gonna get front and center,

or get 5 years for breakin' an enter.

Move quickly, but no runnin',

Shhh, I think somebody's comin'.

Hear the front door key and I flee,

Out the back with a fist full of jewelry.

Over the wall, but don't fall,

Wipe my sweat cuz that was a close call

Gettin' ganked by TBD is a lesson so,

Iz there any more questions?

Agreeing with the bond issue.....starting to see more and more of this and it is a bit odd. Also, Travis I think was just doing this for street "cred". He looks like his rap career or boy band career could just be taking off.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Sat, Jul 19, 2008, at 7:46 PM

Yep...$25K bond is very low...compared to the $125,000 for the large cache, 12 oz of weed, captured by Bloomfield's finest.

So..you can invade a person's home, steal $7,000 in valuables and it's less serious than a little weed. What IF the lady or man had confronted this guy directly? Would he have seriously injured or killed one of them?

-- Posted by Bearcat72 on Sat, Jul 19, 2008, at 1:08 PM

Good work Dexter Police. Stoddard County, why only $25,000. bond? That sounds a little low , considering the crime.

What happened to the rest of the loot that they were missing, and how did the guy get inside the house?
