Progress on Bearcat Event Center is only a click away

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

Noreen Hyslop photo - The Bearcat Event Center, under construction by Brown Construction of Dexter, has a projected completion date of late fall, 2009. The building will accommodate 2,600 people and will be available for hosting local, district and state extracurricular activities. Progress on the center can now be viewed online from any home computer.

Modern technology seems to be constantly at work around town, and a new feature on the campus of Dexter Schools serves as proof.

A web cam is currently positioned at the building site of the Bearcat Event Center under construction just east of the high school building and by utilizing a website from home or work, anyone has access to the ongoing progress of the project with just a few clicks on their computer keyboard.

By logging on to any search engine and then entering 204.184.188.9, residents will be provided with a live broadcast of the center as work progresses at the site.

"The web cam accomplishes two goals," according to Superintendent Dr. Ken Jackson. "It allows residents to watch the ongoing progress on the center and it also provides us with a link to safety for the district. The site is under 24-hour surveillance."

As construction on the building continues, Jackson explains, the camera will be moved into different strategic positions so that residents logging on at home will be allowed to view the building from the best possible vantage point.

Once the Bearcat Event Center is completed, the web cam will be utilized in another area of the district as a safety tool, Jackson adds.

The public may also log onto the school's website at dexter.k12.mo.us and then input the series of numbers above to access the view from the web cam.

Oh I'm very relaxed thebackwardx, I find it very interesting that you have taken the time and energy to point out such errors with such accuracy. I apologize if you were offended.

Relax clickytown. All I did was point out that the information provided here is incorrect (how to find the camera) and that the camera itself isn't setup to allow access directly through the IP (haven't tried going through the website, and I'm not sure that sentence was there when I posted).

I guess you'd prefer -

1) incorrect information

2) a non-functional camera

3) paying for this project, and no doubt the camera, without being able to use it

And the Statesman doesn't need my help to get these kinds of stories correct. They just need to pay more attention, and when they give directions on how to do something, actually try those directions out to make sure they work.

thebackwardx:

for crying out loud, how far can you possibly be from the construction site? I know Dexter is so huge now!!! Just get in your car and drive over, take out a lawnchair sit and watch them build the thing or better yet, go down to the Statesman and apply for a job.

Is there an webcam for the toilets in the elementary schools that leak all over the floors and into the hallways?

Holy Cow, Daily Statesman. You guys really need a technical guy to go over things for you.

First of all, searching for "204.184.188.9" with Google returns no hits at all. Searching for "204.184.188.9" with Yahoo returns one hit, which is this very article.

The reason for this is that 204.184.188.9 is not a term for use in a search engine. It is in fact an IP address that identifies a certain computer on the internet.

It is analogous to a URL such as "www.google.com". When you type "www.google.com" into the address bar of your web browser and press enter, your web browser contacts a special type of server called a "name server" and provides the URL. That server then returns a sequence of four numbers in this format XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX. Those are the very same type of numbers as "204.184.188.9". They are an IP address.

So, to view the web cam you do not need to enter "204.184.188.9" into a search engine. Instead you can copy those numbers into the address bar and get to the site that way.

But alas, it seems that a username and password are required to access the website. So still no web cam for we internet folk.

If they were to stop construction and leave it at that picture right now, it would be just as good a facility as the Osage Center in Cape Girardeau.

Nothing fishy about it. I understand that the tech dept. worked to get the camera in place and it's working splendidly. Log on and see for yourself. An ingenious idea, I'd say. Informs and protects the public, all in one swipe!

This sounds a lot like Spy Gate to me. Seems a little fishy.
