Bernie awards bids to contractors for street, sidewalk improvements

Friday, July 25, 2008

The Bernie Board of Alderman awarded contracts for improving streets and sidewalks in some areas of the city at their meeting held this month. The street contract was given to Apex Paving of Cape Girardeau with a bid of $83.33 per ton of asphalt. The sidewalk contract went to McKuin Lumber Company of Bernie with a bid of $15.94 per linear foot of concrete.

In addition to Apex Construction, Pace Construction of Poplar Bluff also bid for the contract. Their bid was $99.86 per ton. The board voted unanimously to award the contract to Apex.

McKuin Lumber was the only bid for sidewalk work. The alderman stipulated that the city retain the option to reevaluate the project as worked progressed to see that it stayed within the budget.

The streets to be re-paved are: McNew Drive, 2,555 feet; Medler Street from Bowman Road to Brown Street, 1,317 feet; and South Spiker from Bowman Road to Day Street, 341 feet.

The sidewalks to be resurfaced are along the following streets: South Drake from Bowman Road to Day Street, 395 feet; the east side of Mann from McKinley to 405 Mann, 153 feet; the east side of Mann from Allis to Fordyce, 377 feet; south side of Allis from Mulberry to Mann, 395 feet; west side of Mulberry from Crumb to the Nazarene Church parking lot, 271 feet; west of South Walnut from 407 S. Walnut to Pointer, 377 feet; west side of South Walnut from 509 South Walnut to Brown, 465 feet; and the south side of Fork from S. Walnut to the driveway at 210 Folk, 80 feet.

The alderman also awarded a contract to Maloney, Wright and Robins Auditing of Farmington for the city's audit. The amount of the bid was $10,900. Boyer and Associates of Park Hills submitted a bid of $14,500. The city went with the lowest bid.

Other action at the meeting included approval of stocking the City Pond with 1,000 pounds of catfish. The fish are to be one to three pounds in size. Flowers Fish Farm of Dexter will do the stocking. City permits to fish at the pond are $5 per year for residents of the city and $3 for a two-day pass for others. A Missouri fishing license is required.

Scott: I am talking about buttroids. Not muleroids. Muleroids are what you get from loud fans cheering on teams that don't play defense and beat Campbell by the ten run rule.

Hoon, have you ever had "muleroids". Not a good thing. I believe Tone lived and went to school in Bernie because he couldn't hack it at his previous school, it seemed that a lot of kids did that. I would like to hear Tone's comments as well.

I know Tone Loc has an opinion on this one. He says Mules give him 'roids.

Yeah....hopefully Dexter can pattern itself after the sidewalk and curbs in Bernie and become a successful community.

Maybe the City of Dexter will make sidewalk and curb improvement also after seeing what a really small town can do....

I wonder if Tone Loc has anything to add to this story? He has some inside contacts in Mule Country.
