Noreen Hyslop photo Thirty-four-year-old Michael L. Carlson, of Dexter, sustained serious injuries shortly before noon Friday when he reportedly pulled the tractor shown above, into the path of this pickup truck. The driver of the truck, 17-year-old Austin Mace, also of Dexter, was reportedly southbound when the John Deere tractor crossed in his path headed west. Mace was not injured in the wreck, according to the Highway Patrol report. The accident occurred on Route AD, about 2 miles north of the AD and Highway 60 overpass. Carlson was airlifted from the scene to a medical center in Cape Girardeau.

I JUST GOT BACK FROM SEEING MIKE. HE IS NOW AT ST JOHN'S MERCY BRAIN INJURY HOSPITAL IN CHESTERFIELD FOR REHABILITATION. HE WAS SITTING UP IN HIS WHEELCHAIR WHEN I GOT THERE. THEY HAD JUST BROUGHT HIM BACK TO THE ROOM. HE LOOKS GREAT. HE HAS A LONG WAYS TO GO YET, HE IS WHAT THEY CALL LOCKED IN (LIKE IN HIS OWN LITTLE WORLD) HE IS AWAKE AND DOING SOME RESPONDING. HE FOLLOS DAWN WITH HIS EYES AND WHEN SHE ASKED HIM FOR A KISS TODAY HE PUCKERED HIS LIPS. I JUST CRIED. GOD IS SURELY WORKING A MIRACLE. THEY ARE SAYING THIS REHAB MAY BE 4 TO 6 WEEKS. JUST REMEMBER THE FAMILY IN PRAYER.

Could someone give me an update on Mike. My thoughts and prayers or with him and his family.

-- Posted by jimpy0673 on Tue, Aug 19, 2008, at 8:35 PM

I am on the phone with Dawn and she said Mike has his eyes open. He followed her across the room with his eyes. Things are improving. Keep up the prayers. God is a good GOd and He gets all the Glory for all He is doing in Mike;s life,

I forgot ( and admit I am ashamed of myself) to give thanks and glory to the Lord for working a miracle in Mike's life.

-- Posted by mizzou_mom on Mon, Aug 11, 2008, at 11:15 PM

VERY good news! Thanks for the update.

-- Posted by mizzou_mom on Mon, Aug 11, 2008, at 11:14 PM

UPDATE

Mike is doing much better today. They took out the ventilator and he now has his trach. He's breathing on his own so this is a miracle. He may possibly be transferred out of ICU later this week and may get to start rehab in a couple of weeks. This is great news and God is Awesome. He is not fully awake but is becoming a little more alert each day.

Keep the prayers going up and you all that are praying are so appreciated.

Spoke with Mike's grandmother this Monday morning and Mile is still in a 'sleep', hanging in there and concerned with the brain situation. Prayers continue for family.

-- Posted by dexterite on Mon, Aug 11, 2008, at 11:10 AM

Good to hear Mike is improving, a few years he was a little boy growing up behind the alley here in Dexter where I live. Prayers are continuing for Mike and his family.

-- Posted by dexterite on Sat, Aug 9, 2008, at 9:35 AM

This is good news! God is awesome indeed, and He is the healer. Remember when two or more gather in the Lord's name and stand on faith, God will move mountains! Thanks to Jesus for the miracle He is working in Mike's life!

A new update.

They had Mike sitting up in a chair today for a while. He is hanging on. He has not woke up yet but seems to be responding a little more at times. The doctors are pleased with his progress and said it is a slow recovery. He doesn't have any time frame when he will wake up but we know when God gets ready for him to he will.

Just continue to pray and we thank each and everyone of you.

I came upon this accident right after it happened before the Emergency Personell had got there and I immediatley said a prayer. I am just glad to hear that the man is doing ok now. I am saying a prayer for both families. The young man was standing in the middle of the road and you could tell he was clearly distraught. I hope everything goes well for both families. Respectfully yours.

Thank you for the updates. I am soo glad to hear that Mike is doing better. The power of pray is awesome. Please let Dawn and Mike know that they are in our thoughts and prayers. Mike is a very nice guy and always has a smile. I hope for more updates! :)

I am just someone who is misunderstood most of the time but cares. Your news is AWEsome......just know many, many, many are praying for Mike and it works!

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Thu, Aug 7, 2008, at 1:12 AM

It's 10 pm and around 5:45 this evening Mike raised his head, shoulders, and part of his back. This is great news. He acts like he is getting restless from laying on his back all the time. Just keep up the prayers because we know they are working.

-- Posted by soldierspastor on Wed, Aug 6, 2008, at 3:18 PM

YES! Thanks for the update and for making yet another day better for each of us. Continued prayer.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Wed, Aug 6, 2008, at 1:07 PM

Good morning everyone. Mike is progressing today. They took the monitor out of his head that measured the swelling. That is a good sign because it means the swelling has gone down and has not swollen in a while.

They are possibly talking about taking the ventilator out in maybe a couple of days because he is coughing on his own. They just don't want the sucretion do go back down into his lungs and him not be able to get it out on his own in time.

This is all progress and we thank everyone for your prayers.

We know our God can perform miracles and he is performing on right before our eyes.

Just keep praying for Mike for a complete healing and for Dawn for strength to get through all of this.

-- Posted by soldierspastor on Wed, Aug 6, 2008, at 10:54 AM

Good to hear that Mike is making such good progress, looks like a good sign of recovery. I was touched by how he smiled when his son talked to him, that is something that would help me to pull through too if I were in Mike's place. My prayers are with everyone.

-- Posted by mizzou_mom on Wed, Aug 6, 2008, at 7:32 AM

GREAT news! Mike will slowly and surely win this incredible challenge. I don't think you have to worry about any negativity here. Mike turning his life around is inspiration to many. Mike overcoming the odds he was given last Friday only adds to it!

Still praying for all involved. Go ahead, do the same...only takes a few seconds!

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Tue, Aug 5, 2008, at 11:34 PM

I am not Deb, I am Dawn's step mother but that does not matter.

Here is an update on Mike. He is improving slowly. He is doing the nurses commands and he smiled when his boys talked to him on the phone today. They are suppose to take the brain monitor off tomorrow as the swelling has gone down and staying down. He currently has a feeding tube and they have over doubled the amount of intake in less than 24 hours. He has had movement in his left side and today he tried to open his eyes.

From Dawn to you all. We thank you for your prayers. Dawn is holding up and staying strong. She knows that Mike is a fighter and is in God's hands. This is a slow process but not one that he cannot overcome.

Remember, if you do not have anything positive to say about this situation or Mike please do not say anything at all.

Mike left here about 4 years ago and came back a different person. Please stop talking about what he used to do.

-- Posted by soldierspastor on Tue, Aug 5, 2008, at 10:20 PM

Hey Deb, We're praying for ya'll.Keep us informed and let Dawn and family know we're thinking of them and in our prayers..

-- Posted by mat4711 on Tue, Aug 5, 2008, at 7:49 AM

Just heard first hand, maybe second, but good enough that he made good progress today and had more movement than they expected. His eye is still a concern, but that will be a worry later on. Now he needs to continue to improve and hopefully the trauma to the head will be able to be overcome. Mike is a strong guy and has battled and won other challenges. Continue to think of this family and pray for him and he will be back soon. God Bless this family and everyone involved in this.

To Mike's mother in law:

It is good to hear that Mike is making some improvement, it is my sincere pray that he makes a full recovery soon.

-- Posted by mizzou_mom on Mon, Aug 4, 2008, at 6:14 PM

Amen.....

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Mon, Aug 4, 2008, at 4:03 PM

God bless Mike and his family. The power of pray is an amazing thing and that's what they need. Keep them in your prayer's and miracles will happen. God Bless!

-- Posted by BonScott on Mon, Aug 4, 2008, at 2:38 PM

I am Mike's mother in law and if you don't have something positive to say don't say anything at all.

We are just trying to hold things together. Mike is in bad shape and needs a lot of prayer. WHile you all are typing, GOD is performing miracles in Mikes life. He is not awake yet but he is having some movement in his body. He has several fractures in his face. My GOD is a miracle performer. Me and my husband both minister and I am going back to the hospital today to be with them.

Remember we want no negative talk about this anywhere, If you can't say something positive don't say anything at all.

-- Posted by soldierspastor on Mon, Aug 4, 2008, at 12:07 PM

Amen, mizzou mom! I found Jesus on a Jailhouse floor one time!

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Mon, Aug 4, 2008, at 11:06 AM

marine,Tim Russell can't perform miracles, only God can do that, and that requires FAITH. You sound almost judgmental saying, and I quote ,"i think anyone writing comments on here about other peoples lives needs god "....is that not exactly what YOU are doing? Perhaps you should take your own advice, which leaves much to be desired if I am being honest. Also, Hoon is correct, use a CAPITAL G when you spell God, that is just down right disrespectful, seriously.

-- Posted by mizzou_mom on Mon, Aug 4, 2008, at 12:42 AM

Does anyone on this thing type in complete sentences? I think we all agree that it was an accident and no one is to blame. I don't think Pastor Tim needs called in for a miracle. There are many other options in town for finding God.......notice the G on God. He deserves his name capitalized I think. And who brought drug recovery up and why?

Prayers to the families involved in the accident......and for Mike's full recovery from his injuries.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Sun, Aug 3, 2008, at 10:52 PM

i think anyone writing comments on here about other peoples lives needs god and they should go down to thje light house church and get on their knees at the alter and get rid of this stupid affliction, also brad the jug head hessling run a great celibrate recovery class,

-- Posted by marine88 on Sun, Aug 3, 2008, at 7:08 PM

EXCELLENT ADVICE mizzou_mom I AGREE 100% I DON'T KNOW EITHER OF THESE FAMILIES BUT WE USED TO LIVE IN DEXTER AND MY HEART GOES OUT TO BOTH OF THE FAMILIES, AND WE WILL KEEP THEM IN OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS.

-- Posted by clickytown on Sun, Aug 3, 2008, at 3:01 PM

I Dont blame them it was accident i hope he get well as soon we will pray for him ....

-- Posted by sable66 on Sun, Aug 3, 2008, at 12:56 AM

denene, why don't you go check the accident report and see what the TROOPER'S report said? You can't tell by the picture!! Seriously, trying to find someone to blame will not change what happened. What Mike needs is prayer and a healing touch from God, not us trying to figure out which driver was at fault, that is not our job.

-- Posted by mizzou_mom on Sun, Aug 3, 2008, at 12:38 AM

Check the accident report, it is open to the public. I checked it out and according to what I read, this is an accident and neither driver should be blamed. My prayers are with BOTH driver's and their family, especially Mike, I pray that he makes a full recovery and that the Lord comfort his family during this very difficult time.

And dexterman, please realize the comment left by Austin's girlfriend was left by a young teenage girl who feels the need to defend her boyfriend. I don't think she meant to offend anyone, perhaps she is somewhat defensive since some teenagers feel they get blamed for these accidents because of their age...just a thought.

-- Posted by mizzou_mom on Sun, Aug 3, 2008, at 12:32 AM

I meant to say Austin was on the road not aaron sorry! people!

-- Posted by emilyanAaron on Sat, Aug 2, 2008, at 11:20 PM

Ok! I"m Austins brothers girlfriend and to tell the truth it was an accident and for the person that said it had to be the drivers fault b.c it was in the grass can i please correct you...aaron was on the road and he was on his side and the tractor was turning around so i hear in the middle of the road and austin hit him and spun into the grass so IT WAS NONES FAULT! stop blaming ppl if you wasnt there ok thanx and Austin feels very bad for this all happening and im praying for austin and the guy that got hit! please lord let them both be ok and i love you lord just let this one thing turn out ok! my prayers also go to the familys!

....love always! emily and aaron!

-- Posted by emilyanAaron on Sat, Aug 2, 2008, at 11:17 PM

Sounds like NO one to blame....like was said, ACCIDENT. Feel bad for Austin and hope he copes with this in the right way and also pray for Mike and Dawn and their kiddo's. Sounds like it will take a miracle so we all need to be sending up some prayer.......BIG time!

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Sat, Aug 2, 2008, at 5:19 PM

Mike is currently at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis with serious head and facial trauma. Please keep him and his family in your prayers.

-- Posted by ryanj on Sat, Aug 2, 2008, at 4:37 PM

i guess the picture doesn't speak for itself as it appears that the wreck happened on the grass which means the driver of the truck ran off the road and hit the tractor.????????

-- Posted by denene on Sat, Aug 2, 2008, at 1:50 PM

Please dont pointing fingers. Mike is a very good man that has three children under the age of 14 and a wife. He is fighting for his life this was an accident. Dont blame anyone. I was there.

-- Posted by dexterman on Sat, Aug 2, 2008, at 10:36 AM

Austin is my boyfriend of 2 yrs....and i know he is a very careful driver. The tractor was on the wrong side of the road. Austin was on the right side.and trying to get home....it was not his fault please do not leave rude comments. He feels TERRIBLE, and would not apperciate rude snobby comments on something that was not his fault.

thank you
