Aldermen table a second application for a pool table at Sonny's Place

Wednesday, September 3, 2008

A local attorney visited the Dexter Board of Aldermen Monday night following the recent rejection of a pool table license for Sonny's Place, a local bar.

Dennis Wilson, representing the bar manager Scott Green, came to ask the board why the application was denied and to submit a new application.

Apparently, the original application was in Green's mother's name. The new one has been submitted in Green's name.

Green's attorney, Dennis Wilson, had several questions regarding why the application was denied and which ordinance the decision was based upon.

"I recommended that the license be denied primarily because Green has a clear substance abuse problem," Chief of Police Paul Haubold told the Board. "If it's in his pocket, it's inside the bar and behind the bar. I can't in good conscience make a motion to approve a license for a known drug offender."

Wilson pointed out that other than a pending felony DWI charge, Green only has an ordinance violation for marijuana and a misdemeanor marijuana charge at the county level.

Haubold acknowledged that neither charge was technically in direct connection with the bar.

Wilson also argued the point that Sonny's has been wrongly classified as a pool hall based on the ordinance being used.

"Even if there is only one pool table, we have always treated it as if it were a pool hall," City Attorney Bud Lawrence said illustrating that the city had not treated Sonny's any differently than any similar establishments. "It's a tavern and it's a pool hall. I really see it as both."

The ordinance in question leaves it up to the Chief of Police and City Administrator to determine the applicant's 'moral fitness to operate a pool hall.'

The Aldermen unanimously agreed that the best course of action at this point in time was to table this issue giving them some time to review the ordinances.

"I think we need some more time so that we can make a more informed decision in two weeks," said Aldermen Rick Hux.

The issue will be revisited at the Sept. 15 meeting of the Dexter Board of Aldermen.

Nice to see such important matters are being taken up. Way to go guys! Now I see why it is such an honor to be called an Alderman.

Am I missing something here? Was the bar run differently when the license was in his mothers name. Let the guy make a living for crying out loud.

Robbie C.....Is it just because you are a rocker and dead that I agree with you....Answer: NO. You make sense. I am crying out loud and hoping they move on to something much more important than going after a legendary watering hole.

How does the Chief of Police have a say in this? To my knowledge, the Police Department doesn't get a vote. And just to clear something up, Sonny's is NOT a pool hall. Those morons need to take a poll on that one and see what they come up with.

There are 2 or 3 pool tables in that tavern on the corner and it always has the biggest scum bags in Dexter hanging out there. I've never seen a fight at Sonny's, but I've been there when a few have broke out 2 or 3 doors down. Haubold...good grief...my Honda ATC 110 used to outrun his police cruiser back in the 80's. Give Greeno some slack.

IDIOTS!!!! Sonny's is not now, nor has it EVER been a POOL HALL. It has been a local bar for DECADES. It was owned and operated by Sonny Jenkins and his wife for many, many years until their son, Jimmy, took over. Then, he was killed due to stupidity of a dune buggy driver..and for not "strapping in". Buddy Lawrence never stepped foot in "Sonny's Place".

Oh, and Jim Morrison, where would you have the "lower level" crowd go? To the Hickory Log bar maybe? Or to Robbie D's? EVERYONE has a right to go where they want if they behave properly. Sonny's has been a place to go for a cold one after work for a long, long time.....and WAY before Buddy Lawrence even thought about becoming an attorney. Sonny's always took good care of customers and there have been many well-known people from Dexter frequent the place years ago.

Scott Green should SUE the Board of Alderman and get this in the hands of a judge who isn't too STUPID to see the difference between a BAR/TAVERN and a POOL HALL.

These are the same bunch of KNUCKLEHEADS who banned Pit Bulls from Dexter city limits without doing ANY research or getting EXPERT information for the board. There is a special on this Friday evening I believe..either on "Animal Planmet" or "National Geographic". It shows what happened to all those Pit Bulls that were confiscated from Michael Vicks home. Out of about FIFTY dogs only ONE was put to sleep for being too aggressive and one was put to sleep because she was too ill to help. ALL the rest were checked for TEMPERAMENT and placed for adoption. Organizations from as far as California drove thousands of miles to pick up a few dogs to find them homes. Watch the show...and you will be 10 times smarter than the aldermen of Dexter.

The Missouri Humane Society gets it. The Humane Society of the United States gets it. The ASPCA gets it. But..the good ole boys in the Dexter Board of Alderman are too much "DUH" and not enough "DO" to get it.

People that can't tell the difference between a bar and a pool hall shouldn't be making judgments and decisions that affect the citizens of the entire town. Think about it.....I think shannonhoon and I finally agree on something. :-)

But don't get used to it.

-- Posted by Bearcat72 on Thu, Sep 4, 2008, at 1:19 PM

I think Pit Bulls should be banned from playing pool at Sonny's ONLY on the weekends. I think Jimmy was killed in an accident and I don't appreciate you calling me "lower level"...so no, we don't agree on much.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Thu, Sep 4, 2008, at 1:49 PM

Mister Semper Fi, you need to Simmer Down. Morrison was actually taking up for Scott and his bar. And spare us the history speech on Dexter, been there, done that. And why in the hell is Michael Vick in this conversation.

I think Bearcat72 is still dizzy from running in circles on that track team. What a moron.

-- Posted by BonScott on Thu, Sep 4, 2008, at 7:40 PM

shannonhoon and Jim Morrison..you both are such non-hackers. Leave town for a little while and grow up. Oh, sorry..too late for that, you are both already at the pinnacle of your life.

I used to shine shoes in Sonny's and shoot pool in the pool hall next door owned by Bob Gaines and Sonny..so kiss my grits. You don't know sh*t!

My mom worked at the International Hat Factory when it was beside the railroad tracks there and I would go ask her for $.50 to shoot a couple of games of pool. We didn't have much but...mom and dad loved Sonny.

Frank Edwards owned the liquor store and cab stand there. Do you remember him or are you both just full of CR*P?

Bonscott...maybe some day we can meet and I can put a MORON imprint in the middle of your forehead...You have "been there ,done that"?...I doubt it very much. I doubt you know much at all about DEXTER.

-- Posted by Bearcat72 on Thu, Sep 4, 2008, at 9:00 PM

BonScott..if you don't understand that Michael Vick is germane to this conversation in regards to decisions by Dexter aldermen, you are truly the real MORON.

-- Posted by Bearcat72 on Thu, Sep 4, 2008, at 9:48 PM

and shannonhoon continues to be a bootheel TROLL.

-- Posted by Bearcat72 on Thu, Sep 4, 2008, at 9:49 PM

Semper Fi Bearcat72, Semper Fi.....threatening to use violence? I guess that goes with your background. Shame, shame. If only you knew. But I will never clue you in now because I want you to keep typing stuff like that so nobody will forget how big of a BAG you are.

You're not only dizzy, I bet you have cauliflower ear as well. Keep reminiscing 72 and don't forget to shine those shoes.

-- Posted by BonScott on Thu, Sep 4, 2008, at 11:03 PM

72 is KING of DEXTER....But you have to move away to grow up. And if you grew up in Dexter and know where Sonny's and the hat factory and pool hall were, you are all knowing.

I knew Sonny. I knew Frank. Frank knew Sonny. Franks dog humped Mike Vick's pit bull. Mike's pit bull bit an Alderman. The Alderman was Scott Green's principal. The principal gave Scott Green detention. The detention teacher went to Sonny's to play pool after work. The shoe shiner at Sonny's was known to spend time in the little boy's room if you know what I mean. He liked this more than football, so he quit the team to wrestle and run track. He invented living in the past and reminiscing and has moved away and grown up. What a man. He now spends time on the internet and flirts with people, often calling them trolls.

ALL THIS IS THE POLICE AND THE ALDREMAN WANTING TO HAVE MORE CONTROL. IF IT WAS A MEMBER OF THIER FAMILY OR A WEALTHY PERSONS FAMILY EVERYTHING WOULD BE FINE.

THIS TOWN IS THE WORST ABOUT IF YOU HAVE MONEY YOU CAN DO ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING BUT IF YOU DO NOT FORGET IT.

TO BAD WE CAN NOT GO BACK TO THE WAY IT WAS WHEN PEOPLE LIKE MA HART, DUANE MALLORY, JACK SMARR AND WILLIS CONNER WAS IN OFFICE. DEXTER WAS A WONDERFUL PLACE TO LIVE AND RAISE A FAMILY BACK THEN, THE PEOPLE IN THE CITY GOVERNMENT ACTUALLY CARED ABOUT THE RESIDENTS NOT JUST GETTING THIER NAME ON THE CITY LETTERHEAD AND IN THE PAPER.

You want the truth? You can't HANDLE the truth.....(trolls)

-- Posted by Bearcat72 on Fri, Sep 5, 2008, at 7:30 AM

I don't live in Dexter and don't know much about any of this. I did get a good laugh from shannonhoon's midnight ramblings. Loved it, hoon.

-- Posted by gardengirl on Fri, Sep 5, 2008, at 10:22 AM

GarGirl: Thanks....its just what I do. Since you don't know much about Dexter, let me introduce you to Mr. DHS 1972. None of my friends nor myself can figure out who he is, which means he is likely one of those wrestling track stars who excelled in the late great Bud Jenkin's English class. He also thinks the QB in '71 was the greatest thing to put two hands under another guys buttcheeks even though my sources who were on the team and didn't quit claim anyone who has watched Cat football knows there are several, not just one, who have been better. He also gets turned on by all of this, forgets he is on the DS and thinks he is on eHarmony sometimes, calling out to those he fantasizes about as trolls.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Fri, Sep 5, 2008, at 11:28 AM

gardengirl...shannonhhon has a lot of "late night" entries because she has no life. She is a very identifiable TROLL, as she likes to sit and "snipe" other people every chance she gets.

She thinks I was in Mr. Jenkins class...truth is, I was in his wife's class..and Mrs. Clodfelter's class. Also had Mr. Flowers..great teacher. Spanish with Ms. Setzer and her faithful pooch.

Mr. John DeArman...Coach Vaughn....I'm sure you will have bad things to say about them all....since they were all part of a great era.

She likes to get stuck on the fact that I was, and still am, proud of a football team from 1971. I could care less if there have been better QB's or teams since then. You play who you play...at the time. Only trolls like shannonhoon say things like..."The 1971 Bearcats wouldn't hold a candle to the 19** Bearcats"...well, who cares?

And yes...she does qualify as an internet TROLL regarding many of her entries. Personal attacks and uncalled for remarks are the marks of her trade. Sorry, don't need eHarmony. Very happy. I'm just trying to figure out why that black cloud follows you around.

If she told me a little more about herself I bet I could figure out who she is. Come on shannonhoon...share something.

-- Posted by Bearcat72 on Fri, Sep 5, 2008, at 12:13 PM

Here goes and if you figure out who I am, more power to you '72. I had MR. Jenkins. Claudias was the king of our English language and if he hadn't passed on before, this era of talk would surely have killed him. Didn't care for DeArman and/or Vaughn, although Vaughn has went on to be nothing but impressive. I had Clodefelter...timeless, Flowers...boring, but good, Setzer...what a story, might not survive today, but hard to say. Amazing human being.

Flowers 1st hour class was one of the funniest groups I can recall. Those guys were hilarious, smart A*** really, but fun.

I was shy and only involved in band (flute) and pep club. I guess you could say I was easy and ended up having my first child right after my senior year. College was tough, but I made it through. The black cloud you speak of has followed me for most of my days and I enjoy its shade. Please stop with the holier than thou crap. Calling people out for calling people names and then calling people names makes you seem like a gay shoe shiner at Sonny's, or was it the pool hall, or was it the hat factory, or was it the wrestling lockerroom?

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Fri, Sep 5, 2008, at 1:50 PM

I need a fillet knife to cut through the hypocrisy that spills out of Bearcat72s mouth. UNBELIEVABLE!! 72, your favorite band has to be The Little River Band. Because you just keep walking through the park and REMINISING. Keep it up though, because it reminds me how grown up I am because I left Dexter.

Wasn't there a big "scandal" with a bunch of guys in the Class of '72 stealing and things....thought I even remembered some felony stuff or cover up of that sort of thing. Also, my cousin who played football and graduated in 1974 still talks to this day of the class of '72 possibly being the biggest bunch of underachievers to graduate from good ole DHS.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Fri, Sep 5, 2008, at 2:29 PM

Hoon, doesn't Greeno have a license to sell beer but can't get a license to operate a pool table???? That reminds me I think my pool shooting certification is up for renewal. I gotta go study for the exam.

Why don't our elected officials make a trip to Jeff City and recruit some new industry to this town so we will have a need for more pool halls. Oh, they are too busy weighing that melon that was in the paper last week to see if it will break the Stoddard County record. CAT72 I think I ran track against you at DHS and you got smoked!!!

-- Posted by reggiewayne on Sat, Sep 6, 2008, at 12:20 AM

Sonny's burgers still rock! Hope he don't lose the license they need to make/sell those!

-- Posted by mrsdolphin on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 8:51 AM

I hope Robbie D's keeps up. They need to remember to get their dart board certification as well. 72 Wrestled too, Reggie...I think it was 103 lb weight class. He quit the football team. I might have too if all it was were thieves and underachievers.

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Mon, Sep 8, 2008, at 10:10 AM

What a joke, Dexter politics at its finest. The powers that be are only concerned with the people that its politically correct to mess with. If you have the right last name, money, or the right job in this town you can get away with whatever you please. Its always been that way here and it always will be and there isn`t a soul from here that doesn`t know that. I really admire thoss moral standards of not knowingly letting him run his bar with what might be in his pockets, that same common sense could be used in several cases in Dexter - but what do you want to bet it isn't. Good stuff.

I am feeling an under current of protest and support building for this landmark of a watering hole. I say we shoot pool there ANYway!

-- Posted by shannonhoon on Tue, Sep 9, 2008, at 8:47 AM

Scott Green, I can not beieve these people will not let you have a pool table!!! This is hilarious. I'm so gad I don't have to get permission to have a pool table if I wanted one. Hang in there and good luck. You used to get into such trouble in 7th grade. Looks like some things never change. Ha!!

People

You have so much to gossip about that you don't even realize that ALL THOSE SKID ROW BARS need to be removed from the face of Dexter. Do you realize the problems they cause the residents with alcoholism, drugs, violence, immoral behaviors and attitudes that are quickly devouring them? Sometimes I feel sorry for you all but most of you will never change your attitudes and Dexter will die a slow, putrid death from the scurge of problems already there.
