Can one play change the outcome of a football game? You better believe it can.

"We came out on fire," Dexter coach Aaron Pixley said after the game. "We weren't running the ball real well there early, but we were passing it down the field, but just one mistake can't stop you from playing football. I felt like that one mistake offensively (the interception) kind of got in our offense's heads or whatever, but we just quit executing at that point. It just seemed like Gosnell kept getting more and more momentum and kept getting stronger. You've got to tip your hat to them, they played a great first half and we didn't."
Gosnell scored on all five of its first half possessions, using six touchdowns to put 40 points on the board. Dexter had five first-half turnovers, four of which led to Pirate touchdowns. Mills (11-of-21 for 139 yards) threw four interceptions in the first half that set up three of the Pirates' scores, and Seth McBride (12 carries for 32 yards) fumbled once that led to Gosnell's sixth TD of the opening half. Mills only had five interceptions all of last season and has already matched that total in Dexter's first two games this year.

Gosnell's Double Winged-T offense again proved to much for Dexter's defense, as the 'Cats slipped to a 1-5 series record against the Pirates. Jevon Smith rushed for 139 yards on 13 attempts (none for a loss) and scored twice, the long coming on a 45-yard dash in the second period to push Gosnell out front, 34-0.
Dexter could only net 61 yards of offense in the first half as the Pirates poured it on to establish the outcome of the game early. Dexter finished with 209 yards of offense (70 on the ground and 139 in the air), while Gosnell rolled up 324, 216 on the ground and a surprising 108 through the air.
"Really the open field tackling wasn't the problem, it was inside all that mass of bodies," Pixley commented, referring to how Gosnell packs all its players in a tight formation and utilizes misdirection. "Finding the football is difficult against them. You really have to blow their offensive line up to stop them. We did that at times but we didn't do it enough.
"I felt like, really, some of our defensive linemen that needed to get more aggressive got more aggressive as the game went on and that's a good positive thing," he continued. "But we were over pursuing, our linebackers were over pursuing, because they (Gosnell) were great cut back runners. They would pitch, run to a certain hole, then the backs would cut back early, and we're flying' to that hole, then our backside pursuit had over pursued and boom.
"They are great at getting in third down situations and getting first downs," Pixley added. "A couple of times we had them third and nine and third and eight and both times they got a 10-yard run and a 12-yard run. You've got to stop that. And we didn't do a very good job of stopping that.
"We lost our composure in the first half, and that's very non-typical of a Dexter Bearcats team, but at the same time we got it together at half-time, came out and kept our cool, albeit, we played against some of there number two's, but we kept our cool and we just tried to execute from that point on."
Dexter did right the ship somewhat in the second half, scoring on its first possession of the third quarter after holding Gosnell to a three-and-out series.
Mills connected with Ryan Windham for a 27-yard strike and Dylan Acevado's PAT was no good, but the 40-6 score did take the 35-point mercy clock lead out of play.
Dexter crossed the goal line again with 5:14 to play when Josh Sifford scored from one-yard out. The PAT was good and Dexter trailed 40-13.
Sifford, who finished with 66 yards on 13 carries, exploded around the corner for 30-yards and the six points with just 25 second remaining and the successful PAT set he final score at 40-20.
Defensively, Hunter Bruce led the Bearcats with 12 tackles, five solo. Aaron Mace had six solo tackles and 11 total, while Corbin Matthews was charted with nine tackles, one for a loss.
The Bearcats will next be in action Friday when they will travel to Sikeston to resume their rivalry with the Bulldogs, who improved to 1-1 on the season with a 48-6 win over Charleston Friday night.

Good call hoon, '72 was about to go Private Pyle "Full Metal Jacket" style. That would not have been good.
Babhoon has a better ring to it btw...
And another thing, my reliable sources say '72 was an animal on the mat!!!!!!!!and taylor made to kick butt in the Marine Corp!
BC72,
I too respect your service to our country. I was simply pointing out the hypocracy of your posts. I do appreciate that you still keep track of the Cats from afar. Always remember, the board is fake, football players are real. They are still just kids.
SL:
Just to let you know, I am going not going to keep responding. This blog and ALL the others is a form of entertainment....and discussion at times....and only that. Any time someone like yourself is truly offended, I have NO problem stopping and not continuing. I think our views of Dexter are very similar. I think our views of Dexter athletics are almost identical. I think the fact that you moved away but still enjoy keeping up and supporting the place from afar is cool. I respect your service to this country MORE than I could ever tell you. No more. I am calling a truce here, which is really not needed since I have taken all of this as simply free entertainment. You take care and again, thanks for defending my freedom to have the opportunity to get on here and type about mostly nothing!
Later tater.
HOON/Rube/Troll is out, will return ONLY in fun.
Buffoonhoon...your entire post indicates you don't really know as much as you want people to think. Was there a "stealing scandal" in '72? Never heard about it but probably one of your delusions. Just so you keep your next BS line straight. I didn't play football until my senior year...and so what. On the other hand, I would like to have seen you on the wrestling team with Coach Clyde Vaughn and Chuck Koerner..and see you go through their workouts and then go for 3 periods on the mat. You must have been a superstar or something since everyting seems so easy for you. Have you ever trained for, or ran, a 440 or an 880? I doubt it..but you sure can talk about how easy it is. Oh yeah..Doc ran track too...as did "Buddy" Lawrence. Ask him if cross-country was "easy" like you imply.
You are a true RUBE. You just don't get it that Dexter is the town that instills values in the kids...and never has had the "depth" to put forth too many CHAMPION athletic teams. Who cares/ It seems, nobody but you. Such a sad little person...and you seem to be joined at the hip with Robbin. Go PARROTS.
Not 3-4 AS GOOD as Doc....3-4 easily BETTER than Doc. Your lifelong friends may not be quite as loyal as you would like to think. Can we get to some insight on the 72 stealing scandal and also the apparent problem underachieving on the grid iron? And, certainly not interested in your letter jacket. But congrats on lettering your Junior year and then quitting the team. Good job participating in wrestling and track. I heard it was an unbelievable accomplishment to make both of those squads back in '72. Robbie C, he isn't with us or agin us.....he is a lover of trolls and little people.
Robbin, oh no..not you too. Have you been drinking kool aid with shannonhoon? Just so you know, there is nobody that has stronger feelings about Dexter than me. Oh, and here's some news for you...since I don't know YOU or shannonhoon, I could care less whether you think I'm "with you or agin you". GEEZ...maybe you 2 can get together at the same keyboard soon.
Dang, hoon. You got ole Bearcat frothin' at the mouth. I cracked up at the letter jacket comment. Bearcat 72, you're either with us or agin us. Don't trash the players one week then come back with some Tony Robbins crap the next. Momma always said, "If you don't have something nice to say.....
Do you ever grow weary of your own self? I don't care how many of your "good friends" know who I am. Chances are I still have more "good friends" in Dexter than you do and I left 36 years ago. Good friends...ie; LIFELONG.
And who really cares if there have been "3 or 4" QBs at Dexter who were just as good as Mathis? Anotehr 36 years and you can say there have been "4 - 8 QBs just as good". You just don't get it. Every team and era play in THAT era....and against THOSE teams. You seem to get great pleasure by denigrating those guys every chance you get. Don't worry about making me feel bad...I have dealt with trolls and little people like you for many years. Send me your email and I'll send you a pic of me in my letter jacket....including FOOTBALL. On second thought...don't.
Nope....saw video on the '71 team and have a bunch of good friends who know who you are. Funny you brought up Mathis, b/c there are likely 3-4 QB's who have played at Dexter who are just as good. Still waiting for your take on the stealing and idea that the 72 team underachieved so I can compare it with my buds. Keep up with the name calling, and then later on you can claim that all I do is call people names. Get back to watching your old footage of wrestling practice and staring at yearbooks.
I think you should just sign off as BUFFOON...not HOON...or maybe as HOONBUFFOON. Yep...that pretty much describes your lack of wit. The real truth is, you didn't know ANYTHING about the 1971 team until I brought it up and you started researching. hey..maybe loserhoon, trollhoon, nolifehoon,...I'm sure you can add to this list of prospective titles for yourself..
Trolls and rubes get on one post and rip a team apart, then get on another and act like Knute Rockne. Quitters don't have a say in this......
72 quit a class of footballers who underachieved like few Bearcat teams ever have.
Love, HOON.
TROLL...only a rube like you shannonhoon, only a rube.
The guys lost some of the MVP's to graduation in May. It will take some time but they will build the team back up.
OR....you could quit the team , wrestle and run track!
And to all you "guys" who feel the love from 72, check out his posts last week on how bad your secondary sucked!
Its not whether you win or lose.....oh wait, yes it is.
Keep trying guys. Just because you don't always win the football game doesn't mean you aren't building a team ethic and a personal character that you can carry the rest of your life. YOU are different...regardless of the scoreboard.
