City accepts bid for airport rebuilding

Tuesday, October 7, 2008

The Dexter Board of Aldermen officially accepted a bid Monday night to get the ball rolling on the airport repair project.

The repairs are a result of the January wind storm that rolled through and destroyed numerous buildings at the airport.

The bid, from C. A. Walker Construction of Dexter, was for a total of $437,000. The company will build a nine-unit T-hangar that will replace the old one damaged in the storm.

The funding will come mainly through a grant from MoDOT Aviation that will pay for 95-percent of the project with finds collected through a tax on aviation fuel. The city will be responsible for only five-percent of the total cost.

The buildings were insured, but at their approximate value at the time of construction in the 1970's of around $190,000.

In other business Monday night:

* Police Chief Paul Haubold announced that trick or treating will take place in Dexter on Halloween night 6-10 p.m.

* City Engineer Darryl Orr reported that the Westport drainage project is nearing completion and that they expect it to more than handle the incoming water.

* Water Superintendent Tom Espey reported that the lagoon renovation project is underway, but has been slowed due to the construction of the equipment not yet being completed. Once the equipment arrives, the project will begin moving quicker as weather allows.

* Park Superintendent Lawson Metcalf reported that the last portion of the parking lot at the new gymnasium has now been paved and the company doing the surveillance camera work began the installation Monday morning.

* Library director Pam Trammell announced that the library will be receiving an LST grant for $1,233 for new parts for their microfilm reader. The 25-percent match required by the grant will be met by the Stoddard County Genealogical Society.

* Alderman Kirby Taylor reported complaints regarding people riding horses through his neighborhood late Saturday night. He stated that there had reportedly been damage to a couple of property owner's lawns. Haubold said that it is legal for them to ride horses through town, but if there was property damage then it would be up to the individual property owners to file a complaint.

Are they going to lengthen the runways to accept 757s? That would be cool.

It would also be nice if the Airway's Cafe could be upgraded to a slightly larger place with more seating. The food is generally good but a little more diversity in what is available is needed.
