Gun enthusiasts stocking up on firearms before Jan. 1

Friday, November 28, 2008

Christmas shopping and hunting season typically make this a busy time for gun dealers. This year it's expected to be even busier.

Gun enthusiasts in the area and nationwide are stocking up on firearms out of fears that the combination of an Barack Obama administration and a Democrat-dominated Congress will result in tough new gun laws.

Jeff Dukes at The Gun Shop in Dexter says there has been a "significant" increase in gun and accessories sales. He said customers are particularly stocking up on high capacity magazines and other accessories that were banned or restricted in the Clinton administration. He adds that demand is also high for AR-15 rifles.

Dukes says that both Joe Biden and Obama are associated with more gun controls, and that bringing into the administration people like Hillary Clinton increases the fears of sportsmen.

"Their record speaks for itself," he added.

Larry Jones at Jones Guns and Ammo in Dexter said guns are selling so fast "we can't keep them." The biggest sellers are the semi-automatic hand guns, said Jones.

Jones said he had only four hand guns left. He said calls have been made to suppliers, and they can't get more. He said dealers are even calling the store looking for guns, because of the shortage. He, too, believes that "fear" of more stringent gun controls are driving the demand.

Eric Bien at Easy Trade and Loan pawn shop in Dexter said he also has seen a big increase in gun sales. He said the biggest seller at that store is the AR-15, a semi-automatic assault rifle. He estimated that gun sales have more than doubled, including the sale of both rifles and hand guns.

Bien said people know that Vice-President elect Joe Biden helped pass the Brady Bill while in Congress, and that Obama has supported stronger gun controls in Illinois.

He said attempts to restock his store have been unsuccessful because "even the distributors are out."

Joe Gooch, owner of Southern Rod and Gun in Sikeston, said, "People are afraid that they are not going to be able to buy them in the future, especially the semi-automatic weapons,"

He estimated that, since Election Day, he's seen a 200 to 300 percent increase in gun sales.

Alan Reiman, owner of Re-Armms Inc. in Sikeston, said he's also seen an increase in demand. "It's been busy," he said. Reiman said he keeps up with the news, especially concerning gun ownership, and said the local scene is a good reflection of what reports are across the nation.

According to the FBI, background checks increased 15 percent in October from the same month in 2007, as the win by Obama looked increasingly inevitable.

President-elect Obama has said he respects Americans' Second Amendment right to bear arms, but that he favors ''common sense'' gun laws. Gun rights advocates interpret that as meaning he'll at least enact curbs on ownership of assault and concealed weapons.

As a U.S. Senator, Obama voted to leave gun-makers and dealers open to lawsuits; and as an Illinois state legislator, he supported a ban on semiautomatic weapons and tighter restrictions on all firearms.

Gun advocates take some solace in the current makeup of the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled 5-4 this summer to strike down the District of Columbia's 32-year ban on handguns. For now, gun rights supporters hold a narrow edge on the court, but Obama could appoint justices who would swing it the other way.

The comments of local gun shop owners reflect those fears.

"They look at some of the proposed legislation, and they want to get them while they can," agreed Reiman. He said he and others expect the president elect to run the country similar to how he has in Illinois, which has the toughest gun control laws, and also the highest crime.

"Most people tell me they are buying because they are afraid of this Congress and this president," said Gooch. "The Democrats are just not big gun people and they're the ones that we see come out with all these regulations against guns."

Gooch said he thinks there is a real cause for concern -- but he's not sure how much.

"Are they going to outlaw all guns? I hope not," he said. "We don't know to what extent, but I think we will see some regulations."

Hurley agreed, but said she thinks the hype was just to benefit the election.

"A lot of things are said in a political race to try to get the most interest. Sometimes we never see anything from it once the election is over, and sometimes we do," said Hurley. "But the right to bear arms is something this country was built on, and it would be difficult to take that away."

The store owners have seen both men and women scrambling to purchase guns and ammunition.

Reiman, who also offers courses to carry concealed weapons, said the classes are filling up more quickly, too.

And the demand can leave sellers in a bind -- or people looking to buy with fewer options. "It is very difficult to replace our inventory," said Gooch, "because there is so much demand nationwide."

Backseat Driver said "Why would anyone need an AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle in Dexter Missouri?"

Several reasons. The AR-15 makes a great hunting weapon. With the stock peep sights mine is accurate out to 200 yards. The adjustable stock suits me as my arms are short. It also fits my sons. My 17 year old is 6'2" and has long arms (stock all the way out) My 23 year old Airman is 5'11" (stock in one notch) My eleven year old sets it one notch from all the way collapsed and my eight year old set it all the way in. The .223 round is very small and has little recoil for a high powered rifle and the small fry can handle it. The eleven year old took his first deer with it this year with a head shot. A guy at the check station asked him why he went for a head shot and my son said "cause I wanted to kill him" removing all doubt about this being a lucky shot.

Beyond all of that, Backseat seems to miss the point of the second amendment. It is not about hunting. It is about defending the country from tyrants. The kind of tyrants who have no respect for Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, or the Freedom to Keep and Bear Arms.

The gun banners want to do away with what they term assault rifles despite FBI stats showing these have a crime rate of less than two percent. We all know the criminals will just move to another type of gun so the impact on crime will be less than two percent. Several states have banned .50cal rifles despite a zero percent crime rate. California has banned my 9mm pistol because it holds 12 rounds instead of 10 or less.

The common denominator is that these laws have little or no impact on crime which is the excuse for all gun control. Its a big lie. My wife is a nurse. She thinks everyone is sick. The media reports a lot of crime. They see more than anyone of the dead bodies. They think everyone is a criminal and therefore we should all lose our guns.

A relative of mine had a medical practice in Dexter until he was killed by a nut case with a legally acquired gun ten years ago. The nut case showed up at his office looking for him. Had he kept a gun in his desk drawer, he could have had a chance. Instead, he tried to out run a .357 and didn't quite make it. This shooting happened in Sikeston. E. Zach Lee-Wright

McCain won by a resounding margin,,,,3800 votes. That's a real landslide.

Well, here's the Constitution Amendment #2's take on the subject. There is nothing in the right to bear arms that stipulates what kind of firearms a citizen has a right to own. Remember that that the 2nd Amendment gives law abiding citizens the right to bear arms for defense purposes. The framers of the Constitution knew that a well armed citizenry (militia) was neccessary to defend against the tyranny of a government gone bad. I don't own a gun, but I will certainly argue for the Constitutional right to bear arms as long as I have breath!

Scary is right! Why would anyone need an AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle in Dexter Missouri? (Unless, of course, they are going shopping at Wal-Mart on Black Friday.)

I think the rural gun owner in Missuri did vote. John McCain received the electoral college vote from Missouri.

This is one subject that should wake the American Citizen up big time. Here in Missouri, we shouldn't have very much of a problem, especially in our rural area's. St Louis, Jefferson City, Kansas City,MO, and other good sized cities in Northern Missouri are the ones that will have a bigger problem. There are already " rumors " that, in some areas of the Ozarks, there are terrorist training camps already set up, the roads leading to them have armed guards posted. But, are they really rumors or is there some truth/fact to the stories ?? What mainly concerns me, is the fact that hundreds of Missouri gun owners, instead of voting their guns on Election Day, sat on their collective duffs, and " didn't have time " to go vote. Now that we have a President & Vice President Elect, elected to the highest office in the land, both of which are staunch " Anti Gun " Politicians. Sure they say they believe in our rights to own guns, when they are making a speech, but their voting records show an entirely different aspect of what they really believe. Well it's too late to cry now, stock up on ammo & weapons, and hope for the best. You are welcome to my time and I thank you for yours.
