John William Brehmer was born on June 27, 1945 in Alva, Ok., the son of the late Elmer W. Brehmer and Lillie B. Brehmer and died at his rural Dexter home on Sunday, Dec. 28 at the age of 63.
John grew up on a farm near Fairmont, Ok. and graduated from Garber High School in Garber, Ok. In 1967. He graduated from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Ok., and soon after came to Missouri looking for a teaching job.
John taught high school Vocational Agriculture for two years in Brunswick and went on to work for a wholesale fertilizer company who sent him to Dexter. He helped Russell Fleeman set up a fertilizer plant south of Dexter and a year later joined partnership with Russell in the business called Fleeman Farm Supply. Ten years later, John bought the business that became Brehmer Fertilizer.
John spent the next 17 years running the business along with his brother Jerry, supplying fertilizer, seed and chemicals to area farmers. John was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer in l986. The reoccurrence of his cancer over the years forced him to sell the business in 1997. He spent the next several years golfing, gardening and enjoying his grandchildren.
In July of 2007, he was diagnosed with sarcoma cancer and had to have a hemipelvectomy which involved the amputation of his pelvic bone and his leg. He enjoyed each day of life, however, and refused to let his health issues limit his ambitions. He never gave up!
John was united in marriage to Marilyn Heitfeld, his high school sweetheart, on Sept. 3, l966, at Fairmont, Ok. and to this union two children were born.
John is survived by his wife of 42 years, Marilyn Brehmer of the home at rural Dexter: by his son and daughter-in-law, J.T. and Monie Brehmer and their children, Meagan and Will of Dexter: his daughter, Julie Brehmer and his other grandson, Cy Warlick of Springfield, by one brother, Jerry Brehmer and wife Miriam of Dexter: one sister Beth Bliese and husband Dave of Jackson. He also has an extended family of children, grandchildren and a multitude of friends.
John was a faithful member of Faith Lutheran Church in Dexter for 38 years and was serving as head elder at the time of his death.
