John T. Vangilder, son of the late Thomas P. and Mary Ellen Wooten Vangilder, was born in Greene County, Ark., on Jan. 2, 1913, and died at the Golden Living Center in Dexter on Jan. 31, 2009, at the age of 96.
Mr. Vangilder had lived in Arkansas before moving to Dexter many years ago. He was retired from Union Electric and a member of the First General Baptist Church in Dexter.
On Oct. 25, 1947, he was married to Leona Wright in Paragould, Ark. She preceded him in death on April 13, 2001.
Surviving are two daughters, Erma Lou Hooker and Fay DePriest, both of Paragould, Ark.; one step-daughter, Linda Garner of Dexter; two step-sons, Billy Pat Wright of Dexter and Clint Wright of Flint, Mich.; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Other relatives and friends also survive.
He was preceded in death by one grandson and nine brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, at 11 a.m. in the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter with the Rev. Kenneth Biggs of Dexter officiating.
Interment will be in the Dexter Cemetery in Dexter with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.
