Walter L. Leirer

Thursday, February 19, 2009

Walter L. Leirer, age 62, of Destin, Florida, died at his home on Feb. 15, 2009.

Walt was born on Dec. 31, 1946, in Bloomfield to the late Clifton S. and Lydia (Crank) Leirer. A patriot and huge supporter of the military, he was proud to have served his country in the United States Navy. Since 1988 when Walt and his family moved to Destin, Fla., they have called it "home." With a combination of being a "people person" and having a dynamic personality, it was no surprise that he was an active member of Destin Church of Christ and the Destin community. Walt spent countless hours volunteering his time to his children's schools and activities. Walt also worked part-time with the US Coast Guard. He enjoyed spending time with his family whether it was fishing or just being in their presence. Some of his most treasured moments were traveling near and far with his family. In Walt's spare time, he was always working on a project of some sort - usually making the ordinary, extraordinary.

Walt is survived by his loving wife, Brenda Leirer of Destin, Fla.; sons, Marshall (Karen) Wright of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., and Phillip (Tami) Wright of Fredericktown; daughter, Ashlie Leirer of Destin, Fla.; granddaughters, Casey and Caylee Wright of Fredericktown, and Ellen and Sarah Wright of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.; brothers, Glen (Alice) Leirer of Panama City, Fla., and Richard Wayne (Terri) Leirer of Carmel, Ind.; sisters, Dora (Carol) Bailey of Haslet, Texas, Ann (Odis) Lewis of Puxico, Patsy (Dick) Wilcox of Sparta, and Kay Leirer of Puxico; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Walt was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Clifton Dean Leirer; and sisters, Fay Robertson, Norma Leo and Toni Evans.

The family will receive friends at Destin Church of Christ, 150 Beach Drive, Destin, Fla, on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Services will be held at the church on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009 at 10 a.m.

The family suggests contributions be made to the Fischer House of the Emerald Coast, P.O. Box 2007, Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. 32542 or to the American Cancer Society, 399 Racetrack Road, N.W. #24, Ft. Walton Beach, Fla. 32547 in Walt's memory.
