100-Mile Yard Sale launches new website

Sunday, May 10, 2009
The 100-Mile Yard Sale has made the push into the 21st Century by launching a modern website that yard salers can use for a variety of functions.

The website, 25yardsale.com, is already live and users can visit the site to find anything from places to eat or sleep to locations of specific yard sales.

In recent years, the sale has been promoted by flyers mailed all over the region, but Janet Coleman of the Dexter Chamber of Commerce thinks this will be a positive change allowing the word to reach farther than before.

"It's really designed to make it a lot easier," Coleman said.

Once you visit the site you can simply click on, for instance, "sleep," and find a printable list with the phone numbers and addresses of every hotel along the sale route.

Restaurants, shopping and even gas stations are all right at the user's fingertips with the simple click of a mouse.

The Dexter Chamber of Commerce, along with Jackson and Kennett, have joined forces and money to create the website and feel like it will have a very positive impact on the sale overall.

"Given the state of the economy, we expect to have a pretty good year," Coleman said. "People are looking for ways to save money and this is definitely a way to do that."

As the yard sale enters its 11th year, Coleman told a couple stories from throughout its history.

"The first year of the yard sale, a man came down with a U-Haul trailer and purchased a barn," she said. He then disassembled the barn, loaded it onto his trailer and left with it.

Another story involved a man traveling south on Hwy. 25 when a woman, just north of Bloomfield, stopped her car right in the middle of the road.

The lady grabbed her purse, flew out of the car (leaving it running) and jumped a ditch rushing up to a yard sale.

The unfortunate gentleman parked behind her then hopped from his own vehicle and climbed into hers. He then proceeded to get her car out of the way so he could pass on through.

The moral of that story? Please stay alert and drive safely during the yard sale because you never know when someone could stop right in front of you.

This year's sale will begin Thursday, May 21 and will run through Monday, May 25 and is sure to be another good time and bring thousands of people right through Stoddard County.

i used to love to go to yard sale's, BUT i try to get all my shopping done before the 100 mi. yard sale's. It is so dangerous, these people drive crazy, walk in out in front of you, open their car door's, they just act plan nut's. but i know they enjoy looking for bargain, i alway's did. Everone just be careful & stay safe, have a good shopping week-end.
