Dexter qualifies in six events for MSHSAA track sectionals

Tuesday, May 19, 2009
HILLSBORO -- Dexter High School's boys 4x100 relay team set a school record to advance to the next round of the MSHSAA Class 3 state track and field tournament and join a good contingent of other Bearcats at Saturday's sectional meet in Farmington.

Zach McCoy, Seth McBride, Dustin Lane and Berry Burge have been threatening the school record all season and finally clearing the hurdle with a time of 44.33 to finish third at districts. The top four in each event move on to sectional competition.

Dexter freshman Taylor Martin provided Dexter coach Jill King with the biggest surprise at the district meet when she clocked a 13.6 to finish first in the 100 meter.

"As a freshman, that is awesome," King said of Martin's performance. "They were running with a pretty good head wind so the times weren't the best, but she surprised me the most with the win."

McCoy will be competing in two events at sectionals after he ran a 11.7 in the 100 meter to finish fourth.

The girl's 4x100 relay also qualified with a third place finish. The team of Lindsey Hindman, Martin, Sarah Tolbert and Jessica Satterfield clocked a 53.2 to advance.

"Both the boys and the girls didn't have the best hand-offs, so that is what we will be working on this week," King noted.

Tolbert will also be a two-event qualifier for the Lady 'Cats after taking fourth in the hurdles (17.6).

Joining the group qualifying for sectional competition will be Cathryn Heil, who went 5'0" in the high jump to claim fourth.

Other Bearcats who missed out on qualifying were: Tolbert in the long jump (7th, 15'9"); Satterfield in the high jump (6th); the 4x800 girls relay team of Lizzie Kohlbaker, Brittney Waldner, Hannah Baker and Caroline Goessling (5th at 10:18, their best time of the season); Kohlbaker in the 800 (7th, 2:32); and the girls 4x200 relay team of Goessling, Satterfield, Kinchen and Madison Pixley.

"I was just so proud of everyone Saturday," King said. "My distance kids ran their best times of the season, my jumpers jumped their best so what more can you ask for. With 16 tough teams in our district we compteted well and did our best. "

The sectional meet will be contested Saturday at Farmington High School.
