Ricky Moore, a 25-year-old father of four from Dexter, drowned in Bollinger County on Saturday while in the process of attempting to rescue both his niece and his brother during a family swimming outing on the Castor River near Zalma.

According to Bollinger County Sheriff Leo McElrath, Moore and his young family, along with his brother Randall Moore and his family, were enjoying a family swimming day at the Sweet Gum Recreational Area near Zalma when at around 4 p.m. a young daughter of Randall Moore became a victim of the river's current. She was reportedly pulled under and was struggling for air. Her father reportedly dove into the river to save his daughter and was also taken in by the current. It was at that time, police say, that Ricky Moore rushed to the aid of both his brother and his niece and pulled them up to safety. Moore, however, was then caught in the current himself and in spite of the efforts of two men witnessing the situation, he could not be saved.

"The current was just too strong," said the sheriff, and the swimmers were just not strong enough to save everybody."

According to Sgt. Jeff Woodard of the Bollinger County Sheriff's Dept., Moore's body was recovered at 6:25 p.m. by members of Zalma's Fire Department in the same area where he had last been seen. On the scene following the drowning accident were the sheriff, members of Zalma's Fire Dept., a member of the Missouri Conservation Dept. and a water patrolman.

Moore is a graduate of Bloomfield High School and was employed with Gibbs Corporation at Bloomfield at the time of his death. He leaves a wife, Amanda Fleming Moore, and four children ranging from eight months to four years of age. A complete obituary appears on page five of today's Daily Statesman.

Ricky was a friend of mine, and a really good guy.

He's gone and has left a widow and four children, and their lives will be hard without their husband and father. But they'll always know that he died in the most noble way possible.

I'd like to see a bench or some kind of monument in his honor at the swimming area where he gave his life.

This is an incredibly sad story! Is someone setting up a fund to help the family?

This is a very dear relative of mine and it is a great loss to our family. He is a hero who took no worry to himself only to those in need. My heart goes out to all and he did not die in vain. He saved those he loved and needed help and would have done so to even a complete stranger. He had a heart of gold.

My heart and prayers are with you all. As well as our love. ( Uncle Johnny I love you and I hope you are able to read this)

He is with Our LORD now and is in forever at peace and in perfect hands.

GOD rest his soul.

Yet was very tragic and heroic. That will not however get you to Heaven. Prayers to the family and friends.

Castor River claimed the lives of a cousin of mine and his son-in-law several years ago, caught in a similar family outing. Our prayers go with both of these families involved--may they find God to be faithful in these days of sadness.

grandof3...what the heck kind of comment is..."That will not however get you to Heaven".

Is this the place for your agenda? Pray for him and the family he leaves behind...and leave the rest for the pulpit. Good grief. thebirdman was just making a point about this young man giving his life for others...and YES, I think the big guy may look pretty hard at that when it's time to read the book of his life.

yea, I kind of thought the same thing? This is not the time for that...think about what you say!
