Dowdy was a self-employed farmer, veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II, member of the Bridge Church of Christ near Pyletown and a resident of Dexter.
On June 6, 1943 he was united in marriage to Lavern Sadler Dowdy in Dexter. She preceded him in death on March 3, 1996. He was then united in marriage to Lila Mae Phegley on Nov. 17, 1998. Dowdy survives of the home in Dexter.
Other survivors include two sons, Dale Dowdy of Bloomfield and Gary Don Dowdy of Dexter; by one daughter, Judy LaPierre of Dexter; two step-sons, Allen Wheeler of Dexter and Andrew Wheeler of Waverly, Virg.; one brother, Albert Dowdy of Bloomfield, Ind.; by one sister, Ermma Lea Edwards of Bullhead City, Ari.; also by four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Besides his first wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Delmer Dowdy and Millage Dowdy.
Visitation will be held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter from 5-8 p.m., Tuesday, June 23, 2009. Funeral services will then be conducted on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 11 a.m. in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel in Dexter. Interment will follow in the Armstead-Dowdy Cemetery near Dexter.
