Chester "Sonny" Horton, son of the late John Horton and Anna Margaritte Kleffer Horton, was born on April 8, 1922, at Bernie and died in the Golden Living Center in Bloomfield on July 19, 2009, at the age of 87.
Mr. Horton was a retired farmer and a resident of Bernie.
He was united in marriage to Dora Jones in 1942. He later married Thelma Rice Kaufman on Nov. 3, 1960, and she preceded her husband in death on April 3, 2001.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Horton LaRue and husband, Charles Wayne of Huntingburg, Ind., and Pam Kaufman Sparks and husband Rick of Rolla; one son, Jerry Butch Kaufman and wife Amy of Manchester, Mich.; one sister, Ruth Craft of Bernie; eight grandchildren, Tony, Jim and Kelly Sparks, Brian, Mark and John LaRue, Beau and Shannon Kaufman; four great-grandchildren, Katie, Rachel, Jack and Jason LaRue.
He was preceded in death other than by his parents and his wife by three brothers, Harlan Horton, Ernest Horton, and Martin Horton; and three sisters, Dorothy Rice, Hester Dawson, and Ruby Horton.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 23, 2009, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel in Bernie.
Interment will follow in the Bernie Cemetery.
